It’s almost impossible to write about this black & white silent film without mentioning last year’s sleeper "The Artist." Some critics have chosen to praise the Spanish import at the expense of its Oscar-winning predecessor—perhaps because it was drummed into the front ranks by Harvey Weinstein’s aggressive campaigning.

Charley Chase is a favorite of comedy connoisseurs but for years, it was difficult to see his best two-reel comedies from the 1920s. They seemed to exist only in scattered 16mm prints, until Kino (drawing on the LobsterFilm archives) and Milestone released their welcome collections.

I can’t imagine anyone concocting a movie about four Aboriginal girls entertaining American troops in Vietnam in the late 1960s unless it were based on a true story.

For the second year, I’ve been asked to host two evenings in Turner Classic Movies’ “Road to Hollywood ” series—last week with Jane Powell in Cambridge, Massachusetts and this week with Mitzi Gaynor in Chicago. Need I add that it’s been great fun?

When people ask why my wife and I travel to wintry Syracuse, New York every March—and celebrate our wedding anniversary there—I try to explain that Cinefest is more than just a four-day marathon of truly rare silent and early-talkie films. It’s also a “gathering of the clan,” a reunion of old friends with whom we’ve spent quality time over the past four decades.

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of screening "The Place Beyond the Pines," which opens in theaters March 29, for my class at USC School of Cinematic Arts. My guests were producer Jamie Patricof and co-writer/director Derek Cianfrance, who made a deliberate decision to shoot his feature on 35mm film.

In the midst of doom and gloom regarding the future of 35mm and digital cinema overtaking the movie industry, I received a press release from Eastman Kodak several weeks ago, boasting that six of this year’s Best Picture Oscar nominees were shot on Kodak film:

No movie ever can, or will, replace 1939’s "The Wizard Of Oz," but taken on its own terms, this eye-filling fantasy is an entertaining riff on how the Wizard of that immortal film found his way to Oz.
