There were so many films, panels, and guests at the third annual TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood this past weekend that it was impossible to take it all in. Since I hosted ten events over the course of the weekend, I missed out on Kim Novak’s conversation with Robert Osborne and her hand-and-footprint ceremony at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, among other highlights, but I still had plenty of great experiences, beginning on the red carpet opening night.

The 3 Stooges Movie You DIDN’T See

The new Three Stooges movie that opened this weekend was in the works for the better part of a decade, and went through many casting changes. What’s more, it wasn’t the first time someone thought of reviving the Stooges on the big screen with new actors taking the place of the original comics.

Everybody likes to be in on an inside joke, but so many horror films have hopped onto the bandwagon of self-awareness that the joke itself may be getting tired. If anyone could reinvigorate the concept, it’s Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, and that’s what these savvy collaborators try to do in 'The Cabin in the Woods'.

First, the good news: this is a heartfelt homage to The Three Stooges of yore, and its leading actors do a remarkable job of channeling Moe, Larry and Curly. Kids who have never seen the Stooges, and adults who haven’t revisited them lately, may have a good time, as the audience did when I saw the film the other night, but ultimately, the movie is the comedy equivalent of a cubic zirconia: an imitation.

The hype-meisters of moviedom have made it difficult to use words like “heartwarming” and “inspiring” without sounding like a huckster…but when you see a film as moving and well-wrought as 'Monsieur Lazhar', it’s hard to resist. Yet what I admire most about the picture, which was an Oscar nominee this year as Best Foreign Language Film, is its restraint.

Letters From Moe

Imagine carrying on a correspondence with one of the original Three Stooges. I was lucky enough to do just that with Moe Howard in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. With the new Three Stooges film about to open, I realize I’ve never spoken about my brief contact with the one and only, Moe. I first wrote to him because I was researching an article on Charley Chase, the unsung comedian who directed some of the Stooges’ comedy shorts. That prompted a reply, written in ink on Stooge stationery, accompanied by an autographed photo in an official Three Stooges envelope! Needless to say, I was thrilled.

As the folks at Turner Classic Movies gear up for their third Classic Film Festival this week in Hollywood, they’re also completing a ten-city “road trip.” I was pleased to host two of these events, with Tippi Hedren in Minneapolis and Jane Powell in Denver. What fun! (TCM hosts Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz handled most of the evenings, held in vintage movie houses around the country.)

Given Nanni Moretti’s track record as writer, director, and actor, there is every reason to have high hopes for his latest effort, 'We Have a Pope'. One would presume that a behind-the-scenes look at the process of naming a new Pontiff would provide ample fodder for observational humor. Instead, the film focuses on the chosen man’s crisis of confidence. Since that man is played by the great Michel Piccoli, this idea, too, offers great promise.

It’s difficult to know what to make of Whit Stillman’s 'Damsels in Distress'. When I screened it for my class at USC my students’ reaction was all over the map. One young woman said it was possibly the worst movie she’d ever seen, while a young man raised his hand to say that he loved it; many others echoed their sentiments. I fall somewhere in between those two extremes.

I avoided reading Steve Stoliar’s 'Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House' when it was first published in 1996 because I didn’t want to learn about an aging, diminished Groucho Marx, and I wasn’t interested in rehashing the exploits of Erin Fleming, the controversial woman who took control of the comedian’s life.
