I can’t imagine how anyone pitched this concept to a movie studio. It’s a big summer movie from the director of "Independence Day", full of huge, explosive action scenes—and completely unexpected comedy.

I feared that we might have seen all the funniest bits of "The Heat" in its trailer; fortunately, I was wrong. The preview only offers a glimpse of what both Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy have to offer in this rowdy, raunchy buddy-cop comedy.

Perhaps because he took such a somber turn in his last film, the ultra-serious "The Skin I Live In", Pedro Almodóvar has opted for a return to the outrageous sexual humor that put him on the map.

I was honored to be asked to host a celebration of Annette Funicello’s life at the Walt Disney Studio yesterday, where Stage One—home of the "Mickey Mouse Club"—was rechristened in her honor by Disney CEO and Chairman Bob Iger.

People often ask me what critics I read, if any. Of course, I’m not typical; I don’t consult reviews to help me decide whether or not to see a film. In most cases, I read reviews after I’ve already screened the picture in question.

I can’t pretend to be a zombie-movie aficionado, but I found "World War Z" to be tense, absorbing, and scary.

What can you say about a thriller that seems absolutely real, so convincing it might be a cinema verité-style documentary?

When my daughter was young, I found myself watching movies through her eyes. I came to appreciate films that delivered a positive message even if I felt they had shortcomings.

I found this film extremely frustrating; on the one hand it treats its senior-citizen characters as “cute” and then delivers moments of genuine pathos that cause you to tear up.

James Gandolfini’s name will always be synonymous with Tony Soprano, the character he brought to life so unforgettably on David Chase’s ground-breaking, compulsively watchable HBO series "The Sopranos."
