Summer is over and we return to Atlantic City by way of 'Boardwalk Empire', now in its third season. Either my life is getting duller or this show is getting better with each passing year, as I’ve been anxiously awaiting its return.

'The Master' flirts with greatness and has much to admire, including exceptional performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Their work is reason enough to recommend the film, yet at the screening I attended the audience was strangely silent at the end.

Screenwriter Jamie Linden ('We Are Marshall', 'Dear John') says he was inspired to write and direct '10 Years' by attending his own high school reunion. Fair enough.

Richard Gere is perfectly cast in 'Arbitrage' as a financial wheeler-dealer whose world caves in on him because of some bad decisions he’s made.

One of the silent screen’s most important stars (and pioneering producers) is being celebrated on an innovative new website. The Mary Pickford Foundation has just launched www.marypickford.org, following a program held in her honor at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Pickford Center on Monday night.

Yes, Virginia, some people still consult reference books, and some people still edit them, like me. At 1640 pages, 'Leonard Maltin’s 2013 Movie Guide' is the latest edition of a paperback I’ve been overseeing since I was a teenager.

There’s a compelling idea at the core of 'The Words', especially as acted out by Bradley Cooper and the incomparable Jeremy Irons, but it’s nearly extinguished by the material that surrounds it, sorry to say. The premise is solid: a struggling writer chances upon a long-lost manuscript and publishes it as his own.

People who attend the Telluride Film Festival for the first time are overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of this historic Colorado town. Filmmakers are impressed by the friendly reception they receive from the worldwide gathering of movie lovers. My family and I love our annual trip to the Rockies and feel fortunate to attend. The jam-packed schedule over Labor Day weekend is an embarrassment of riches.
