If you’ve seen 'Skyfall,' you’ve witnessed the wrong-headed update of the venerable MGM logo, zooming out from the iris of Leo the Lion’s eye! Apparently no one reminded the powers that be that “just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

Friends have asked why my wife and I are auctioning a number of rare posters and lobby cards with Heritage Auctions later this week. Answer: we’re trying to simplify our lives. We haven’t taken anything off the walls that we live with every day and enjoy; there’s just too much “stuff” stashed in cabinets and closets.

In the wake of his magnificent PBS documentary 'The Dust Bowl,' Ken Burns has a new film opening in theaters that couldn’t be more different yet also explores a dark chapter in recent American history.

If you love movies, 'Hitchcock' is hard to resist. It paints an evocative picture of Hollywood and the methodology of filmmaking, circa 1960, while offering juicy roles to Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren, two of the finest actors on the planet.

There wasn’t a holiday that Hollywood publicists didn’t know how to use to their advantage, especially in the heyday of the studios when starlets under contract were obliged to pose for the staff photographers.

It’s rare to find a mainstream American movie that doesn’t rely on formula to some degree. That’s one reason David O. Russell’s 'Silver Linings Playbook' is so refreshing: we haven’t encountered these characters before, and this is a character-driven piece. They’re unpredictable and idiosyncratic, but recognizably real. Even the neighborhood cop doesn’t talk or behave like a stock movie policeman.

A book that many people considered unfilmable has inspired one of the year’s most riveting and rewarding movies. I don’t like using hype words, but I found 'Life of Pi' truly magical. I’m even enthusiastic about its use of 3-D, which seems organic and genuinely enhances the film.

Too many films aimed at children lack a sense of wonder, which is one reason I like 'Rise of the Guardians.' Drawing on the mythology devised by author William Joyce in his series of books 'The Guardians of Childhood,' the movie introduces us to the figures that figure so importantly in almost every child’s existence: the Sandman, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus.

I am never an early adopter when it comes to technology, so I’ve been wary of the eBook trend, even though I received a Kindle as a Christmas gift several years ago. But now 'Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide' is available in both Kindle and Nook formats so I felt I ought to give them a test drive. I

I thought the first 'Twilight' movie was fresh and entertaining, but I haven’t cared about the series since then. The best I can say about this closing chapter, based on the latter part of Stephenie Meyer’s novel, is that it offers “more of the same.” To the series’ fervent fans, that will come as good news.
