The last survivor of John Ford’s stock company has left us. Harry Carey, Jr. died peacefully, on the 27th, two days after Christmas at the age of 91. Everyone who was lucky enough to spend time with Carey—whose lifelong nickname was Dobe—basked in the glow of his wonderful stories.

I grew up on the 1935 Hollywood version of 'Les Misérables' that starred Fredric March and Charles Laughton, and I still think of it fondly. I also like the Claude Lelouch film of 1995, a variation on Victor Hugo’s novel with Jean-Paul Belmondo in the leading role. But I just viewed an epic three-part French adaptation from 1934 that’s in a class by itself.

I give this movie’s costars and creators, Matt Damon and John Krasinski, credit for making a “message movie” as palatable and entertaining as 'Promised Land.'

If you had pulled me out of the theater one hour into Quentin Tarantino’s 'Django Unchained,' I would have raved. The first portion of the movie is utterly exuberant, full of life and the love of moviemaking.

Fearless, funny, sprawling, messy, vulgar and honest: those are just a few adjectives that describe Judd Apatow’s 'This Is 40'. The film earns its stripes as a raunchy, R-rated comedy even before the main title appears onscreen.

'Jack Reacher' is ridiculous…and exciting…and funny…and cheesy. It’s also a great vehicle for Tom Cruise, even though readers of Lee Child’s best-selling novels are complaining that he doesn’t resemble the author’s description of that character.

Unlike some films that have become critics’ darlings, 'The Impossible' has no pretensions. It isn’t edgy and I don’t think it has a hidden subtext. It’s just a beautifully told, enormously moving story of a family’s experiences during and after the 2004 tsunami...
