I fell in love with Lone Pine, California all over again this weekend, having been away a number of years. The 24th Annual Lone Pine Film Festival beckoned me back, and it didn’t take long to fall under the spell of Mount Whitney and the majestic Sierra peaks that overlook the town.

Forget all you’ve read or heard about early use of 3-D unless you’ve seen it with your own eyes. The World 3-D Film Expo beginning this weekend at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood may be the last opportunity you have to do just that.

Another edition of the TCM Classic Film Festival has wrapped in Hollywood, and I had a great time hosting a variety of events, as a backup to the channel’s stalwarts Robert Osborne and Ben Mankiewicz, and meeting a vast number of dedicated movie fans from all parts of the country.

Every year, the Santa Barbara International Film Festival gives me the opportunity to host its Modern Master tribute to a major star or filmmaker. This year Ben Affleck and I spent more than two hours on stage reviewing his career, with excerpts from his many films, beginning with "Dazed and...

As the New York Film Festival prepares to celebrate its 50th year, I am reminded of screenings I attended (of movies old and new) when I was a teenager. In 1965 I was present for a Buster Keaton tribute that included his inscrutable Samuel Beckett short 'Film',

People who attend the Telluride Film Festival for the first time are overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of this historic Colorado town. Filmmakers are impressed by the friendly reception they receive from the worldwide gathering of movie lovers. My family and I love our annual trip to the Rockies and feel fortunate to attend. The jam-packed schedule over Labor Day weekend is an embarrassment of riches.

When invited to a film festival in a beautiful or exotic place I’ve never visited before, I usually accept. That’s how my family and I wound up spending the last two weeks in Bologna, Italy, where I served as President of the Jury for the annual Biografilm Festival, a “celebration of lives” founded eight years ago by artistic director Andrea Romeo.

Imagine spending two and a half hours talking to Martin Scorsese! The Santa Barbara International Film Festival gave me that gift on Monday night, and the evening-long tribute at the historic Arlington Theatre was everything I hoped it would be. My only frustration was not having even more time so we could cover all of Scorsese’s films and go off on as many tangents as we pleased.
