HOORAY FOR 1933—EIGHTY YEARS LATERMagic Mike—movie review
So here’s a friendly word of warning: if all you’re interested in is eye candy, watching handsome hunks like Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, and Alex Pettyfer gyrating and taking their clothes off, fine, but you’re going to have to slog through the rest of the picture, too. At the showing I attended you could feel the excitement evaporate; by the time the movie was over, the audience was silent.
Another problem is a leading lady (Cody Horn) who is dishwater-dull…different, I grant you, but still dull. She plays Pettyfer’s sensible sister who’s concerned when he falls under Tatum’s influence and begins stripping. Tatum is immediately attracted to her, but the feeling isn’t mutual.
Joe Manganiello, of TV’s True Blood, and Matt Bomer, from the cable series White Collar, are saddled with underwritten parts and get no chance to register at all, except onstage.
Magic Mike has a seemingly workable premise, about a would-be entrepreneur who’s trying to create building blocks for a better life, but it just doesn’t pan out. And a movie this long needs more than eye candy to hold an audience’s attention.

Yep total agreement about whats-her-face being dull. Also the movie was good until it turned into a bad after school special and even that didn't get resolved. It ended badly and I actually find myself preferring the Full Monty to Magic Mike.

I couldn't agree with your review more. And I'll be darned if the theater was quiet on the way out just like you said! The eye-candy was wonderful and the dancing from Channing was phenominal whether clothed or not, but it always felt like something was missing from the plot. As a woman, I was excited to see all the goodlooking men dancing, however I was not preprared to see as many pairs of breasts in the film. That was disappointing, as well as the lead woman character (forgot her name already, she was that unimportant) and seeing a threesome at the beginning of the film made me not like Mike either, he had to earn my love thoughout the movie so I knew he wasn't just some pervy guy. So I think if you want to watch the fun parts, just watch the first half of the show. All the rest is just blah.
