To quote the press release, “The Leonard Maltin Movie Guide includes the ability to watch trailers, rent or buy movies from iTunes, and add a movie to one's NetFlix queue. The lists feature allows tracking the films you watch, want to see, and own. And the entire database is stored locally, so no network access is required to use the app. The 2013 version is optimized for iPhone 5 and is iOS 6 compatible. Personal movie lists (favorites, recommendations, want to see, etc.) are now backed up/restored via Apple's iCloud.”
I’ve spent my life consulting reference books, but it’s hard to argue with a program that, with a finger tap or two, enables you to acquire an instant filmography or watch the trailer of a film you’re curious about. With another tap you can continue reading about a movie on imdb. MobileAge also sends my new movie reviews to each app subscriber when we post them on this site every Friday. The price is $1.99.
One of the app’s earliest and most enthusiastic adopters was Doug Benson, who plays The Leonard Maltin Game on his popular podcast Doug Loves Movies. He complained that when he upgraded to the new 2013 app he lost all the personalized movie lists he’d compiled with the old app. Fortunately, there’s a solution for this. The MobileAge folks explain:
a) Lauch the Settings app on your iOS device
b) Tap iCloud
c) Tap Documents & Data and turn to Off
d) Go back and launch Movie Guide, you should now see your lists
e) You can now go back and turn Documents & Data to On
Whew! Now that we’ve fixed that problem, I can recommend the new 2013 Leonard Maltin Movie Guide for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with a clear conscience. I use it myself…and I like it.
