It’s almost impossible to write about this black & white silent film without mentioning last year’s sleeper "The Artist." Some critics have chosen to praise the Spanish import at the expense of its Oscar-winning predecessor—perhaps because it was drummed into the front ranks by Harvey Weinstein’s aggressive campaigning.

I can’t imagine anyone concocting a movie about four Aboriginal girls entertaining American troops in Vietnam in the late 1960s unless it were based on a true story.

No movie ever can, or will, replace 1939’s "The Wizard Of Oz," but taken on its own terms, this eye-filling fantasy is an entertaining riff on how the Wizard of that immortal film found his way to Oz.

Some fairy tales and fables are dark, while others invite a range of interpretations. This rendering of “Jack and the Beanstalk” is pretty full-blooded, especially for a family-oriented film, but this gives it some backbone to match its elaborate visual effects.

It’s refreshing to encounter a movie that doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but simply sets out to tell a good story and fulfill the expectations of a genre piece.

When a visual stylist like Korean director Park Chan-Wook (of "Oldboy" fame) is handed a screenplay that demands an atmosphere of portent and dread, it’s likely that the filmmaker will make the most of the opportunity

All I knew about this film going in was that it was based on one of the most popular Chicano books of modern times, written by Rudolfo Anaya and published in 1999. When I learned that it was adapted for the screen and directed by Carl Franklin, I smiled in anticipation of something special.

When I described Sylvester Stallone’s "Bullet to the Head" as cartoonish, I hadn’t seen "A Good Day to Die Hard." This fifth go-round for the Bruce Willis action series makes the Stallone picture seem positively Shakespearean! To be fair to action junkies I should say that if you like watching things blow up, you won’t be bored.

An Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film this year, Pablo Larrain’s No is a persuasive docudrama that chronicles the efforts to unseat Chile’s dictator Augusto Pinochet in 1988.

If you want to attract a young audience with a love story these days, it seems you have to make the leading characters zombies or vampires or anything but the boy and girl next door. That’s the case with "Beautiful Creatures," although I don’t see how that title applies to the film in question,
