When I was told that someone had transformed my 1,600 page paperback reference "Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide" into an iPhone app, I’ll admit I was wary…but the folks at MobileAge did a fine job and now the newly updated app for 2013 is ready.

The last survivor of John Ford’s stock company has left us. Harry Carey, Jr. died peacefully, on the 27th, two days after Christmas at the age of 91. Everyone who was lucky enough to spend time with Carey—whose lifelong nickname was Dobe—basked in the glow of his wonderful stories.

I grew up on the 1935 Hollywood version of 'Les Misérables' that starred Fredric March and Charles Laughton, and I still think of it fondly. I also like the Claude Lelouch film of 1995, a variation on Victor Hugo’s novel with Jean-Paul Belmondo in the leading role. But I just viewed an epic three-part French adaptation from 1934 that’s in a class by itself.
