So what’s the best film of this year? 'Lincoln', 'Les Miserables', or the French import 'Amour'? Maybe it’s 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen'. It all depends on whom you ask—and whom you trust.

Presenting honorary Oscars at a separate event, held in November, has proven to be a win-win for the Academy and the worthy recipients. It also gathers a formidable array of Hollywood A-listers in one room. Wanting to soak it all in, I didn’t shoot as many photos as I should have, I suppose, but I did capture a few special moments...

So many movie-buff discoveries, links, DVD releases and publications cross my desk that it’s not possible to keep up with them all, but I’d like to try catching up a bit. Let’s start with a Charlie Chaplin radio documentary. I don’t know how it escaped my notice for almost two years, but BBC radio in England produced a two-part documentary about the Charlie Chaplin archives.

If you’ve seen 'Skyfall,' you’ve witnessed the wrong-headed update of the venerable MGM logo, zooming out from the iris of Leo the Lion’s eye! Apparently no one reminded the powers that be that “just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

Friends have asked why my wife and I are auctioning a number of rare posters and lobby cards with Heritage Auctions later this week. Answer: we’re trying to simplify our lives. We haven’t taken anything off the walls that we live with every day and enjoy; there’s just too much “stuff” stashed in cabinets and closets.

There wasn’t a holiday that Hollywood publicists didn’t know how to use to their advantage, especially in the heyday of the studios when starlets under contract were obliged to pose for the staff photographers.

I am never an early adopter when it comes to technology, so I’ve been wary of the eBook trend, even though I received a Kindle as a Christmas gift several years ago. But now 'Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide' is available in both Kindle and Nook formats so I felt I ought to give them a test drive. I

My mother, Jacqueline Maltin, died last Friday—peacefully, in her home, at the age of 89. As I try to deal with this, my mind is flooded with memories. It’s often said that we don’t get to choose our parents; I guess I just lucked out.

I don’t know how many young people are aware of the great W.C. Fields, but they ought to be. Two years ago, Zach Galifianakis wrote on his MySpace page, “Influences – my family, my friends and wc fields…” Contemporary comedy guru Judd Apatow has said, “W.C. Fields is the funniest guy of everybody, ever.” When Conan O’Brien was asked by James Lipton, “Who makes you laugh?” he replied, “W.C. Fields I think is maybe the funniest man that ever lived.”

Here are some silly publicity photos of attractive actresses making faces to herald the arrival of Halloween. We begin with an unusual selection, as Jane Wyman was past the starlet phase when she took this picture at Warner Bros. to promote A 'Kiss in the Dark' (1949).
