Trash Humpers Thoughts: An apology/clarification to Mike D’Angelo

I wanted to take a somewhat self-indulgent moment to clarify a rather glib and unsupported remark I made on Twitter about a colleague. Two days ago, I tweeted the following entry: “Michael Lerman wonders how Mike D’Angelo can afford to be so lazy in a recession where so many talented, hard working writers are unemployed.” While my remarks were in response to Mike’s piece about Harmony Korine’s Trash Humpers (and I’ll get to that in a second), I left no evidence to support that in the least. Many of you who know me well know that I’ve been complaining for…

Fall DVDs Not to Miss

I know all the industry minds are on Telluride and Toronto, but I wanted to give a shout out to three amazing DVD releases coming this fall for all the people that can’t be in Canada with us. The first is, of course, the home viewing release of Mark Region’s hotly debated After Last Season. Once believed to be an internet prank, this too stilted to be true trailer turned out to be all the movie its promos promised. But if you’re not like me and don’t want to do crazy things like drive thirteen hours just to check if…

White on Rice and Taxidermia Finally Come To Theaters

Two great trailers went up on the Apple site today promoting two strong releases for later this summer. First up, there’s our first theatrical release for Tiger Industry Films - White on Rice. Directed by David Boyle and starring Hiroshi Watanabe, Nae, Mio Takada, Lynn Chen and James Kyson Lee, the movie is set to hit select US theaters in late summer, early fall. But, if you live in NYC, you can come check it out next weekend at the New York Asian American International Film Festival. We’re showing at the SVA Theater on Saturday, July 25th, at 4:45 PM.…

TREEVENGE!!!!!!

Jason Eisner, for those of you who don’t know, is one of the hottest young shorts directors working today. His pitch perfect 70s horror homages are at all turns terrifying and hilarious. Eisner first appeared to US audiences at SXSW in 2007. After sweeping the Grindhouse trailer competition with his now infamous “Hobo with a Shotgun,” Eisner returned to his home in Canada, preparing new thrills for audiences around the world. So, ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pleasure that I bring to you today, in its entirety, the second short from Jason Eisner (courtesy of Twitch): Treevenge if(document.getElementById(“obj1f866af11db04864bca16236377b518f”))…

Thanks to Todd at Twitch for this one: It seems the production team behind Dead Snow, the Sundance 2009 genre pic soon to be released in the states by IFC, has put together a promotional video to plug the Norwegian DVD release . . . and opted for a video sans nazis or zombies. Instead they got Norwegian FHM model/FHM columnist/Survivor contestant/Popstar Linni Meister to turn the music video for her new hit single, My Ass, into promotional material for the film. I’m just gonna throw it out there that I think IFC should ride this absolutely hilarious advertising wave.…

A lot of fantastic, creative docs were produced in 2008 - Margaret Brown’s The Order of Myths and Marina Zenovich’s Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired come to mind -, but nothing was quite like the big screen experience of Jeremiah Zagar’s In a Dream. It is a rare occurrence when a portrait is able to intimately capture both the public and private details of an artist on an equally grand scale. But when documentary filmmaker Jeremiah Zagar set out to make a portrait of his father Isaiah, a brilliant and prolific mosaic mural artist from Philadelphia, he never could have…

1. Absolutely, absolutely, whatever you do, take some time out of your day, go on iTunes and purchase a copy of Thing with No Name. No matter how sad you might think it will be (and, trust me, it is), you won’t regret supporting this beautifully humanistic and touching portrait of HIV positive women in South Africa that leaves all others of its kind dead in their tracks. Beautiful cinematography, careful editing and a perfectly non-preachy directorial vision make this the online purchase pick for the week. 2.
I want to apologize in advance for adding to the complete oversaturation of the blogging about this film. I had some things I wanted to say and, at this point, I’m not even sure their original anymore, but here goes. Following the precedent set by Cinematical’s Scott Weinberg, I’ve waited through the opening weekend (and then some) to say anything about Zack Snyder’s film “adaptation” of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ legendary graphic novel, “Watchmen.” Now it’s past Monday, so I guess all bets are off. I should mention, though, that while I have plenty to say on the film,…

Pranking Palin

I’m posting this on behalf of Eric Kohn who pointed me towards the story, but was not in a position to blog about it today. Associated Press reported today that Sarah Palin received a prank call from a Montreal radio DJ posing as French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Clocking in at just over five and a half minutes, the scheme carried on until the culprit revealed himself. It kind of goes without saying that this shows how horribly mismanaged the campaign is. What’s more, though, is that Palin seems utterly unable to to comprehend that this is clearly a fake. This…

A Prayer For AFI Fest

My heart goes out to the programmers at AFI Fest today as they struggle to find a new opening night film after Paramount pulled “The Soloist” from the festival a mere week before its premiere. I know how difficult this can be. Films drop in and out all the time after the program is locked the tickets have been sold and it is never fun for the staff, but not very frequently in such a prominent slot. I’m sure Paramount had their reasons, but, nevertheless, I wish the AFI programming staff the best of luck. Thanks to Movie City News…

So, in the past 24 hours, the website Before You Submit was brought to my attention. There’s a lot to look at here and I don’t want to bother summarizing it all, but I will say that while I appreciate the special kind of arrogance and perhaps anger that it takes to create such a site built on what are often misconceptions about film festival programming, I do appreciate the idea that someone is making a concerted effort to give a full analysis to filmmakers on every aspect of their movie. It’s something I wish I had more time to…

I had the pleasure of catching the midnight show of the Screen Gems release Quarantine last night and while others may be ragging on this as just another first-person camera zombie movie (and a remake of the fantastic Spanish film REC to boot), I wanted to make my two-cents pitch for why you should see this purely cinematic experience. What Quarantine lacks in substance and originality (it is a remake after all), it more than makes up for in scare factor. The film, with its rich soundscape and impeccable sense of timing, is completely terrifying. The Brothers Dowdle, the team…

Proud American Trailer

At the risk of offending the filmmakers (and, granted, I haven’t seen the film and it could be genius), I wanted to just note this upcoming piece of cinema. When considering all of the independent films that are struggling to find funding, one must wonder how this gets shot entirely in 70mm.
