It was May 12 in a town where the area code is "512." Does that mean anything? No. Does it really need to mean anything? No. But nevertheless, various film events were happening around Austin:

(A few Austin organizations co-hosted what was dubbed "The 512 Film Night" at a production house in the southwest part of town. The party served as a fundraiser for Reel Women Austin, which had its facilities burn down in a recent, tragic fire. Representing for the organization, board members Beth Sepko, left, and Sherry Mills take a break in front of the great quesadilla bar provided by Maudie's. Beth is also known as Austin's most prolific casting director, recently working on everything from Warner Independent's Every Word Is True to Robert Rodriguez's Sin City. Sherry was the Austin winner of IFC's game show Ultimate Film Fanatic.)

(Stopping by the 512 Film Night fundraiser, here's Austin publicist Melissa Smolensky from PR firm Porter Novelli. Melissa enjoyed - responsibly - sampling the wide variety of wines on hand. Coincidentally, Melissa and I are old pals from our UT days.)

(Across town, at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown, Flicker hosted its regular Flicker Fest, a showcase for indie local shorts made on celluloid. Kicking things off was a solo performance from lovable popster Jerm Pollet, who also serves as one-third of the acclaimed comedy troupe known as "The Sinus Show.")

(The 5/12 night in 512 was capped with a a crew heading over for drinks at popular hangout, the Hotel San Jose on South Congress.)

Area codes and dates are always fun. I bet March 10 is awesome in L.A. August 18 and March 23, for that matter, as well. And man, February 12 in New York City rocks, ditto on September 17 and June 46. But, obviously there's no bigger party than April 23 in Chattanooga... it's off the hook!
