An Education (which opens this month) is a fine movie. It's less a memorable narrative, and more a platform for the amazing breakthrough of actress Carey Mulligan. The entire cast, actually, is rather strong (especially a dynamic supporting performance by Alfred Molina). I'm sure the film will be very successful in the arthouse market, because it's precisely the kind of movie I can happily recommend to everyone's parents. It's quaint and charming and entertaining. Once you finish watching it, you'll be happy you did, but you'll also likely forget about it. Someone may ask "Did you like An Education?" and you'll say "Yes, it's good" and probably add something like "Carey Mulligan is so great, she's gonna be a star." And, that's how this movie will stand over the test of time. Nothing more, nothing less, and sometimes that's okay.
