I still don't know if it was genius or coincidence, but on the same night that John Waters came to town to perform his monologue "World of Trash" in Austin, the Alamo Drafthouse hosted a screening of his film Cry Baby with an appearance by co-star (and former porn star) Traci Lords. I didn't make it to the Lords worship (in my festival career, I've had to shepherd a former porn star or two, and trust me, it's not the kind of crowd you wanna deal with), but I did attend another event at the Alamo last night, a special "interactive" screening of Club Dread, the follow-up to the Broken Lizard Comedy Troupe's Super Troopers. Released in February, the Broken Lizard guys were in town to host a screening that promoted next week's DVD release. It's a pretty good marketing plan for Fox Home Video, especially since the Broken Lizard brand of humor (read: stoner humor), will find much greater success in the home video arena. I chatted with Broken Lizard's leader-by-director-credit Jay Chandrasekhar, as we remembered that their debut feature Puddle Cruiser played SXSW so many years ago, and then Super Troopers not only screened, but tied for the Midnight Movie Audience Award. When an audience member asked if the guys would ever film in Austin, they mentioned their next project might have them do just that. Plus, as Broken Lizard favorite Kevin Heffernan noted, "Seems like everyone else is [filming in Austin] these days." They certainly fit right in and seem to feel at home...
Immediately after stopping by the Broken Lizard event, I ran across town to the Metropolitan Theater for the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival's evening with John Waters. AGLIFF, which happens in late August, is one of the nation's oldest and best gay/lesbian film fests and has a wonderful year-round program. Waters has become a somewhat regular staple, as he paid a similar visit a few years ago, benefiting the fest. His one-man show is hilarious, and you're always reminded of why he's such a great host of the annual Independent Spirit Awards. Hyping his upcoming film A Dirty Shame, he commented that he found a kindred spirit in that film's Johnny Knoxville. After all, as Waters put it, what he and his longtime star Divine were doing in their experimental films, was essentially their generation's version of Jackass.
After his performance, there was an after-party at the club Extreme. The party featured rousing performances by the male drag troupe, the Austin Babtist Women as well as the ever-popular female drag troupe, King 'N Things. King 'N Things features Austin filmmaker Mocha Jean Herrup, whose film A Few Good Dykes had its world premiere at SXSW 2004. Mocha will be in Toronto this weekend screening the film at the Inside Out Film Festival...
