There's been a lot of discussion and debate over fiction vs. nonfiction lately, in light of the recent success of the documentaries Super Size Me and Fahrenheit 9/11. This whole issue and the influence of reality TV hit a peak with me this week.
I was watching Last Comic Standing with some friends, when I found myself bashful in admitting a newfound TV addiction of mine. I'll just come out and say it: Nip/Tuck. I think this show is great, incredibly entertaining, and a welcome remedy for our post-Sopranos weeks. Now, what made me so bashful? The show is arguably not much more than a soap opera, and definitely not my typical cup of tea. But even more so, what struck me as odd is the way in which my friends and myself would have acted if my TV addiction would have been Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Casino, or some other "nonfiction" programming. It's almost as if it's become more acceptable to fawn over so-called reality TV than it is their fictional counterparts.
With the exception of anything HBO produces, how often do you hear people praising their fascination with a scripted one-hour drama or sitcom? Hardly ever. And, while it's not news that scripted TV is in trouble these days, what I do find interesting is the way our culture is not doing much to try and save the fiction. How scripted shows like Arrested Development can come thisclose to being axed, yet "reality" crap like The Swan survives a whole season, is beyond me.
Some reality shows are very good (I love Airline for starters), but many are sticking around for no apparent reason other than decent ratings.
I just think people should not be afraid of falling into some scripted, serialized drama. It would be nice to have a popular scripted show that didn't have Law & Order or CSI in the title. From grade school to the office watercooler, our TV habits are often dictated by a pack mentality. "What's everyone else watching?" It feels like we're trying to join some club. Well, I think we should try and buck that system. Just because everyone in your office or on your pick-up basketball team watches For Love Or Money, doesn't mean you have to. It's okay. If loving scripted TV is wrong, I don't want to be right.
