Tribeca 2005.1: Nobu

Well, here I am, in New York for the Tribeca Film Festival. With some flight delays, I arrived around 7:00 p.m. But I had no time to spare, as I was due for a party at 8:00 p.m. at the spectacular restaurant Nobu. It was the annual Tribeca party hosted by Showtime... legendary because for a few hours, we get to eat some of the best sushi you'll ever have on this side of the Pacific Ocean.

It was also especially fun because it was a party that gave me a chance to see a lot of my NYC film industry pals. As soon as I got to Nobu, I was running into Tom and Mystelle from Nantucket Film Festival, Raj from Hamptons/Berlin fests, Eugene and Brian from indieWIRE, Eamonn from Magnolia, Allen from the 7th Floor, Ryan and Rob from Wellspring, Jared from the Film Sales Company, Seth from Carmichael PR, Tamara from Samuel Goldwyn Films, Brittany from Newmarket, Erin, Dana, and Liesl from Cinetic, Howard from Roadside Attractions, Jeff "The Dude" Dowd, Elma from Trio, Owen from Entertainment Weekly, Ian from Variety, Christian from Technicolor, Mark from "The Rabbi Report," and really the list goes on and on and on. And so did the food. Did I mention the food? It was hard not to stuff our film-minded faces with more fish than Finding Nemo. Oh, and did I mention Tiffani Amber Thiessen was there? And it doesn't take being a Saved by the Bell fanatic - though I am, er, was - to be struck by her.

Plus, the DJ turned out to be a lot of fun, mixing old-school hip-hop with newer hip-pop and pretty soon, the trendy eatery became a dance club for the partygoers. Before long, word started trickling in about the next parties. Boy George was reportedly spinning at the W Hotel's All We Are Saying soiree and the White Stripes were rumored to be at the Excavating Taylor Mead shindig. "The Rabbi," Christian Zak, and I soon found ourselves in Chinatown for the Taylor Mead party... no White Stripes to be found, but we did get a chance to chat briefly with Jim Jarmusch and Michael Almereyda, two of indie film's most stunning and most friendly forces.

The night ended, as it must, with a cab ride back to the hotel and a fresh start today. The weather hasn't been the best, but it's definitely a nice, cool change from Texas... I started off at the gym before finally arriving where I am now, the Filmmaker/Industry/Press Lounge. Next? Off to some movies, some meetings, and - yes - more parties.

I had the chance to attend the Nobu party as well and then to Boulay where the head of CB 1 was dining with the King of Marocco for a possbile expansion of the Ganawa Music festival into the Mid-Eastern Film Festival, a creation that the original architect of the TriBeCa Film Festival, Nicole Bartelme had designed in her blueprints for the TriBeCa Film Fest. Also at the next table was James West and Carol Kraft of Leko Pictures. Off today to the Screening room on Varick.

Wow, Kelly Kapowski, huh! I hope it was memorable, and I wish I would have been there.

Nobu was absolutely fun.... but it was next door (aka Nobu NextDoor) where John Mayer and Jay Z where grabbing sushi. Spent some time with Jay Z (very cool dude), but my heart remains with John....
