Just Saw 'Sith'

War!

I just returned from an advance screening of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith here in Austin. And, my press pals around the nation seem to indicate that Fox scheduled screenings all around the U.S. at precisely the same time. And man, was it a security process to get in. You had to put your signature on the pass, bring a photo ID, etc. etc.

I knew as much about the film as most people did. I haven't read any early reviews, haven't browsed the novelization. I went in cold.

The film itself is easy to describe in a few quick points (and don't worry, no major spoilers):

- It's the most graphically violent and disturbing of all six of the Star Wars films. Just when you think Lucas won't take it too far, he does. It's amazing to think that the guy we all thought had gone soft on us, was really hiding these dark and violent scenes for later.

- This film makes the first two weak prequels well worth it, if we were building up to this. Episodes I and II do make a little more sense. This is the best of the trilogy in the same ways that Return of the King was the best of that trilogy. This one, though, this is the film we've wanted for 20 years.

- Very, very, very little Jar Jar Binks.

- It's great to witness the actors growing up as performers. Both Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen have matured over the years. I mean, you sit there watching Portman, and you see the momentum of Garden State and Closer shine through.

- The Wookiee planet is awesome. Keep an ear open for a Weismuller-era Tarzan homage. It's classic.

- Everyone's a badass. Sure, you hope Anakin Skywalker becomes more of a badass (and he does). But, Yoda is a bigger badass. Even R2-D2 is a badass for once (just wait and see). Samuel L. Jackson was always a badass.

- The way in which Anakin is pulled over to the Dark Side is totally convincing. I mean, he's supposed to evolve into one of the greatest screen villains of all time, and the process works. You believe the way he was tricked, and how tragic it becomes.

- I wanna spend an entire movie inside the opera/circus/theater that Anakin and Palpatine discuss the legends of the Sith. This "watershow" and its music are intense and amazing. More of that, please.

- Check out the subtle Peter Cushing lookalike, one of the many examples of how Lucas really does tie everything together in a fanboy bow.

- The montage in the middle of the film (I'll call it the "Order 66" sequence and say nothing else) will bring any Star Wars fan to the edge of their seat and grip you more than any sequence in the entire series of the films. It's heartbreaking - and not unexpected - but still presented in a tragic and engrossing manner. It also teases the viewer with some of the other worlds and battles that we didn't spend much time upon... and for once, a Star Wars prequel leaves you wanting more. Wow. I guess that was the whole point. Good job, George Lucas, you clever boy.

what-the-fuck-ever, sounds gay.

Thanks for review. I'm sure that George Lucas tried to keep the amount of homosexuality to a minimum, but was outvoted by "masahiro" here, who really couldn't think of anything to criticize you about.

Posted by Bob Donnell on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Can't imagine Hayden Christensen as a more mature (better) actor . He was pathetic in the first two prequels and from trailers I've seen nothing has changed. No thank you!

Posted by boldlygoin on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I hear parents complaining that the film is too bloody for their children. Can I complain that the first two films were to childish for me? Has Lucas learned anything about special effects from Peter Jackson? Do I have to suffer through another fight scene with Yoda bouncing around like Eric Cartman with green skin and big ears? I am not so sure that I want to give Lucas another chance after he failed so badly the last two times and I don't know if I can take another 90 minutes of Hayden Christenson. Is it wrong that I rooted for the Sand People in Episode 2?

Posted by Editengine on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

where exactly was hayden christiansen in the episode 1? ever see "life as a house"? he ain't too stinkin' bad in that movie.

Posted by leroy on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Sounds like a great movie. Lucas' comments had me kind of turned off, but then he's always been the worst salesman of his stuff.

Thanks!

Hayden wasn't in the first prequel...

I agree that he was awful in the 2nd, but we can't blame him for anything that happened in the first.

I like the part about the War. The liberals, I mean the rebels, are not good people. They want to make the Empire into a communist islamo fascist regime.

Take the movies at face value! All I have heard and seen over the last couple of years is how bad the movies are. Even the original star wars movies were lacking a bit in terms of outstanding acting - but enough to provide a story and an adventure to the viewers.

People are to damn critical - just enjoy what it is......An end to one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever!

Posted by Hurk on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Say all you want but all you invalids are still going to go shell out the money and see the movie; every last one of you.

Just remember - Starwars are geared towards the 10-14 y.o. mentality. Anyone beyond puberty will find these shows moronic, unless they're mentally challenged in someway.

Posted by Jjohn on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

When I saw Episodes 1 and 2, I left the theatre with a bad case of diarreha. It's not that I ate anything bad, it's that the movies were so gay - not in a homosexual sense, but in a "Holy shit man, most Star Wars fans are 20+ years old! Why am I subjected to this? I think I'll go break out my nephew's Barney collection for some real action." I'll wait for the DVD... better yet, I'll download a pirated version.

Posted by Muddy Mudskipper on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I hope my bottom doesn't leak as I leave the theater the same way it did after the last two did.

Posted by Howard The Duck on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I forgot to mention that I was tripping on acid when I saw the first two episodes. Even the trip didn't help... and I still had a case of the trots.

Stop being so freaking picky

Posted by Bush can blow me on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I heard that Lucas now wants to get back to more artistic films. Why do artsy people always do that...they finally make something worth while and then say they want to do something else. If we are lucky we have to wait 10 more years and through 2 more crap movies to see another good one from him.

Posted by Special Sauce on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Speilberg is the only director who can bring together the human drama and intense action.

Posted by eerie on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

You guys are ALL gay. This movie is going to ROCK! If you don't like it, suck on my left nut, ass.

Posted by fart hole on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Well, I don't know much about people who complain because it doesn't fulfill their fantasies of how the Star Wars films SHOULD be; I just know I have enjoyed all the films because I've gone in expecting to be entertained. I've never been let down by Mr. Lucas, and from Mr. Dentler's blog entry, I expect to fully feel the $10.50 ticket will have been worth it. For the innumerable times I see "Sith!"

And to the haters: Grow up! Get lives! Allow yourself to just (I know, it's HARD, but YOU can DO iiiiit) have fun.

BTW - Hayden Christiansen's performance (I thought) showed a young man, frustrated by his situation, perhaps more than slightly driven by the wrong urges, blindly finding his own way. His naivete is made lethal by his rage. Look in his eyes, sheesh...

Ciao for now...

Posted by Jedi Mistress on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Isn't it weird that "star" and "wars" are spelled so similarly yet prononuned entirely differently? When I first thought of that I got so distracted I accidentally ran over a kids bicycle on my motorcycle.

So is the O in C3PO an "O" like "Oh my gosh I've got to name another robot... think I'll just mix some letters and numbers together... again." Or is it an "0" like 90210. Which in fact would really make that bucket of bolts "C3P Zero"? ... just wonderin'

Posted by Sammy Davis on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

You guys must be insane. The Star Wars series is the greatest movie series ever, and we've gotten nothing but brilliance from Lucas in the past. I don't see why you would expect anything else.

Masahiro, nice response, moron. You haven't seen the movie and you're criticizing it? Please. Sounds gay? I'm pretty sure the author was making it sound good. You must not have the mental capcity to understand that, though, because what the author said certainly did not sound gay.

George Bush, that's a typical response. I would expect nothing less idiotic from someone who calls themself George Bush.

Diarrhea? See a doctor. Or simply don't have sex with men before watching the movie.

Posted by Mjordan2nd on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Thank you, Matt Dentler. Good job.

Shut up goes to masahiro and all the rest of you stupid faggot haters. Don't get pissed cuz George Lucas makes more money in a week than you will in a lifetime and cuz you got the Yoda dildo stuck in your pathetic asses. Flamers.

Great review Matt, I'm excited for the film. I agree the first two were letdowns, but this last one sounds like it's the best so far. I'll be there on the 19th. By the way, too bad so many high school drop outs left comments on this site.

This preview is helpful and concise - I really want to believe. But I remember when the reviews came out for Metallica's "St. Anger" - everyone raved about how the band finally had gone back to their roots, how they'd done amazing new things in the process, and how awesome the album was. But the truth is, the album was barely more interesting than "Reload", which isn't saying anything. It makes me sad to say it, but I'll just wait to see this on video and minimize my losses, both emotional and economical.

I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. It's not easy creating a movie to satisfy the masses. I will pay any amount to watch a movie(as long as it is worth it)that is yet to be determined. Perhaps this blogs harsh critics have already seen it.Perhaps.

Now that all 6 are completed, now is the time to remake all 6 with all of the stupid crap taken out (i.e.: jar-jar, ewoks,Hayden Christensen) And put Quentin Tarentino as the director to make sure the things are good. Just keep Lucas in the background behind the checkbook. Just like Startrek TNG didn't get any good till Roddenberry kicked.

WELL YOUR COMMENTS FALL IN LINE WITH WHAT EVERYONE IS SAYING ABOUT THIS NEW CHAPTER IN STAR WARS MYTH- THAT FINALLY WE HAVE A MOVIE THAT IS GOOD, PERIOD. FOR MYSELF I CANT WAIT TO SEE ALL THE NEW IMAGERY THAT THE GOOD FOLKS AT ILM WILL BE THROWING OUR WAY. THE ONLY THING I COULD CRITIQUE HERE WOULD BE THE MESSAGE BOARD AND WHAT A SAD REFLECTION IT IS OF TODAYS ATTITUDES. IT SEEMS ITS ALL ABOUT "GAY THIS AND GAY THAT"..I MEAN, WHERE ARE WE PEOPLE?..IN 1950'S AMERICA?.OR SOMETHING WORSE?..I KNOW THAT THANKFULLY YOU DONT REPRESENT OR REFLECT ALL OF MY COUNTRYS YOUTH AND IN THAT I TAKE HEART.

Posted by PHONEGUY on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

You may remember that episodes 4,5, and 6 were filmed in a completely different manner, with long segments of character development and story. Eps 1 and 2 so far have appeared to target the 30 second attention span generation where we are expected to bounce from bit to bit. I think that Lucas has lost faith in the viewer's ability to enjoy a good storyline, thereby bypassing any risk by catering to people who live for nothing but action. When I think about the eps 4,5, and 6 I think of the great lines from Han and Leia, or the surprise when we saw Lando betray the good guys. Story, my friends, is what we miss, not the action.

In response to GWB's post, it is no surprise that you would say something like this since you, Mr. "President", are the very embodiment of Chancelor Palpatine himself - The Evil Emporer!!! Proclaiming to support democracy when you do everything behind the scenes to strengthen your own dictatorship!! Stirring up a war in which you fuel both sides for your own personal profit! Both hands in two cookie jars! Just like your grandfather Prescott Bush who helped launder money for the Nazis, and great grandfathers Samuel Bush and Herbert Walker were war profiteers before you! Just like Palpatine, you use fear of the war that you started to cause people to relinquish their rights, freedoms, and to give you super "war-time" powers - The Patriot ACT!!! And now you want to make that blashpemeous bill permanent! But that's not enough - now you want the ultimate destruction of democracy itself - setting up a man with unlimited power not subject to either congress or the courts!!! That is, your plan to give the secretary of Homeland Security unlimited powers, whose decisions would be beyond the jurisdiction of any law of congress and could not be challenged in any court!! Lucas couldn't have written a better story to reveal the truth about who you really are, Bush; hypocrite, dictator, war profiteer, emperialist, dominionist, liar, deceiver!

I think we need to see more of Jar Jar Binks. He was the most interesting character from both Episodes I and II. And how FUNNY is he?! I laugh my head off everytime I see him. I'm disappointed that he wont be in Episode III. I'm going to personally write George Lucas about this. For everyone out there, write me if you want to join my Jar Jar binks fan club.

Posted by jordan "the jedi" grotzinger on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

To elephant, I have read and researched very well what I wrote, if you want to check for yourself, look up the REAL ID Act language from the Iraq war appropriations bill (H.R. 1268), and you'll see for yourself just how they are trying to make the secretary of homeland security's decisions EXEMPT from any judicial review and EXEMPT from ANY congressional law. This certainly sounds like unlimited power to me. This person would have more power than the president. And I would fight for anyone's religious freedom no matter what their religion. Yes, there is supposed to be checks and balances, but that system doesn't work very well when politicians enact legislation to set up beaurocratic positions that are exempt from our checks and balances - again, please see H.R. 1268 mentioned above. Our checks and balances also don't work well when one group owns all the voting machine companies and there is no paper trail for proof of how people really voted. Joseph Stalin said, "Those who vote decide nothing, those who COUNT the votes decide everything." Why don't you check out for yourself what people like Richard Perle and Karl Rove and Michael Ledeen think and say and do. Paul Wolfowitz received his PH.D. under Leo Strauss!!! All of Bush's closest advisors openly profess and admit to following the teachings of the one named Niccolo Machiavelli!! Do you even know who that is? Check out his writings - he is Bush's hero. I am not a liberal. I am one who wants to reveal the truth. I applaud Lucas for helping to bring all this to light.

Elephant. Of course there are activist judges who try to legislate from the bench. It's human ego getting in the way of duty. Unfortuantely, the right-wing hysteria that has swept the country has blotted out the fact that there are just as many "activist judges" from the right as there are from the left. It's interestign to note the hypocrisy of that, since the "right" is supposed to exemplify the strict interpretation of the Constitution. One side tries to restrict the things we say on TV and in the public eye, the other tries to restrict what we say to each other (censorship and political correctness.) It's all B.S..

But back to Star Wars.

While entertaining in a purely visual way, Episodes I and II completely failed to carry the spirit of the originals. Yes the acting was poor in the originals, but at least it was earnest and somewhat innocent. I and II appeared glossy and empty. They explained away some of the magic as mere biology...and well-understood biology at that. They failed to touch on myth.

Hopefully III will do better in that regard, but if it doesn't, it will still be enjoyable eye-candy and fun to pick apart and grumble over.

Oh, and some may think it's sad to be a fan of Star Wars. What's more sad though, than someone who posts merely to ridicule others about something they themselves are not interested in? What sad, shallow, empty lives, fit only to buzz around as a minor annoyance. A pimple on the face of society. A rash on the backside of civilization. Sad really.

Posted by wookie01 on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Before we all get to bent out of shape here lets look at the first two movies and see if maybe we can clear things up and make a guess as to how the third movie will turn out.

And if we may lets try and keep the gay comments to a minimum.

----------------------------------
Phantom Menance
----------------------------------

The Good - Pod racing, fight scenes, back story

The Bad - Jar Jar Binks, Midiclorions, young Anakin, Princess Amadalla, most of the acting, most of the dialog, the trade confederation or whatever they were called, trying to get us to believe that a 6 year old can build adn fly his own pod racer, Anakin conceived by the force (fucking stupid idea).

The Verdict - Sucked as a movie. If it didn't have the Star Wars logo attached to it then it would have gone to video in about a month and a half. This movie was proof that you do need a plot and not just a lot of CGI to make a good movie.

----------------------------------
Attack of the Clones
----------------------------------

The Good - Fight scenes, seeing the storm troopers, Yoda fight and the cool bounty hunter.

The Bad - Any point in the movie in which Anakin was forced to speak, ditto for the Queen, Jar Jar Binks again, mind bendingly stupid plot and those "love scenes".

The Verdict - This movie was worse than the first one in many ways. My main gripe was in how it progressed. The entire movie went like so: Action Scene, dumbass love scene with Anakin & Amadala, Fight Scene, dumbass love scene with Anakin & Amadala, Jedi Scene, dumbass love scene with Anakin & Amadala, Fight Scene, dumbass love scene with Anakin & Amadala, Action/Jedi/Fight Scene, dumbass love scene with Anakin & Amadala. Get the idea? Thankfully I rented this and so I could fast forward through most of it. But once again this was a straight to video kind of movie that made millions because it had the Star Wars logo on it. Both of these movies featured horrible acting, childish love scenes, inane dialog, and piss poor plots. I can say this enough, the only reason these films lasted more than 4 weeks at the box office was because they had two words in front of the tittle: Star Wars.

----------------------------------
The Prediction for Episode III
----------------------------------

The Good - Fight scenes, resolution, back story.

The Bad - The acting, the dialogue, the plot, the stereotypes, in fact just all of the usual crap that we found in Episode I and II.

My suggestion, WAIT FOR IT ON VIDEO!

You guys need to relax a little I think. I am criticizing two movies, thats it. I am not making statements about your gender, race, sexual preference, voting style, intelligence, family, breeding or anything else.

If you really do like Star Wars enough to waste your money by going to see the third film go for it. But regardless of how many Star Wars Fan boys go and see it (and subsequently rave about it) it will not change the fact that, as a movie, it sucked ass.

I am sorry that your lives are so intrinsically tied to this movie.

Why in the hell is everyone saying "The Return of Darth Vader"? What's he returning from? Isn't this about his beginnings? Everyone is making it sound like he's back from the dead, or maybe Wal-Mart. Think about it for a minute. How can you return to somewhere you've never been? Just thought i'd throw this out for discussion.

Return of the king being the best of the three? Not in my opinion. It was a snooze fest and their attempt at a large fight scene fell short. The first is the best, therefore comparing it to Return of the King means episode 3 can't be that good (in my opinion).

(B) Very very little of Jar Jar Bings? How about not having him in it at all. A Jamaican voice for Jar Jar bings. Terrible. Garbage.

(C) The new Star Wars are filled with tons of CGI. If I wanted to watch a cartoon movie i'd do so. Why can't you be like the originals, where the special effects were good enough, and it was dialogue rich?

(D) Yoda is more of a badass? You mean like episode 2 where he was frail the whole movie and he somehow started doing triple flips with the light saber? Terrible.

(E) Episode 1 & 2 were garbage. I'll still go see Episode 3 because it's Star Wars, but my expectations are compared to that of the Leave it to Beaver movie.

Posted by Steve on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Jar Jar should be in Episode III. He should have his head lopped off by Anakin.

Posted by E to the ROCK on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I concur with that suggestion. Head lopped off is a great idea. :P

Posted by Steve on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

It's just a movie...pay the ticket or don't. It's all of 2 hours of something to occupy time with, it's not going to change the world with the exception of raising the special effects bar (perhaps). If you think it's going to suck so bad, don't go, read a book, plant a tree, donate blood, make yourself more useful than some silly person who has to spit and whine and blow snot bubbles over something as silly as a movie. Good God get a life...

Posted by baffled byall on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

look dudes .. if kevin smith approves the movie ...that should be good enough for ANYONE that even remotely enjoys anything revolving around star wars.

Posted by snoshi on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

you have to understand, episode 1 and 2 were simply charactor intoduction/develpment and plot synopsis, all builing to where anakin came from, who he was, why he may be more prone to the darkside. i expect episode 3 to be nothing short of spectacular. terrible acting can be a total turn off, but star wars is an awesome story and i have no problem with the way george lucas has put it all together.

Posted by darthnick on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

When I saw the first movie I was 12 and it was an awesome experience. Sci-Fi movies before it were slow with bad special effects. Lucas and his staff created and influenced the countless awesome movies we have today.

Critics at the time hated it the first one. But the fans loved it.

Those who can, do. Those who can't "do", teach. Those who can't "teach" critique.

If you don't like Lucas's work and like to pick it apart like some spoiled brats. Make your own movie, prove to us your childish remarks have merit. If not SHUT UP.

Posted by Pablo on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

To all of you Star Wars haters, why are you even on this site? Why say anything at all? If you are not interested in the film or think it will suck then go watch something else and keep your comments to yourself. Stop wasting space on this messege board. Some of us grew up on the Star Wars stories and can't wait for the final movie. It's all about the creativity & originality of the "story", as well as the action. I think it's brilliant. To comment on special effects, obviously Lucas had to work the way he did for episodes IV,V,& VI because of budget and the lack of computer technology there was at that time as opposed to today. But I think he pulled it off incredibly then and even in episodes I & II. There are millions of fans around the WORLD, who are waiting to see the final episode. And if you are not one of them, take your comments somewhere else. I think George Lucas is a genious. And I can't wait to see episode III!

Posted by GREEN EYED LADY on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

You have to remember that episodes I & II are meant to lead up to why Anikan became Vadar(they touch into his mind and what he has felt deep in his heart since childhood) and how the Empire became so powerful as seen in IV,V &VI. You have to read deeper when you watch each one of these films. And an actors facial expressions can tell a story in itself. The original trilogy was a tease for the whole truth. There's a lot that has to be covered in this final episode....Senator Palpatine becoming the Emperor?,what turns Anikan from his love for Amidala, Leia & Luke being born and separated, Obe Wan vanishing. We'll get to see Vadar being transformed into "more of a machine than man" as Obe Wan said. I do agree on the special effects to a degree. I think the original trilogy seemed more realistic because there was no CGI. Those are the types of movies I grew up on and it's hard to accept all this fake CGI that every single movie (it seems)has. But is is how more and more movies are being made these days, and unfortunately we will probably never get to see those effects like the good ole days. I miss them too. But I'm not going to let that ruin what I've been waiting 20 some years to see!!

Posted by GREEN EYED LADY on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Boy, a lot of people who post on this board seem to subscribe to the Greater Internet Farkwad Theory. That is, that a Normal Person + Anonymity + Audience = Total Farkwad. Holy Moses.

That said, the movie looks awesome, Star Wars is still cool, and I can't wait to see it.

Posted by Asshat on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Once again Lucas will be paid BILLIONS for the rights you use his characters. Do you think he will lose any sleep over whether any of us see this movie. This is his story, he wrote it over 30 years ago. He made the movies for himself, not us!

Posted by Wade on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

So is this really the last movie? Why isn't he making the last 3 as well? Back in 1976 my Star Wars Fan Club newsletter said that the original book series (by Donald F. Glutt) had 9 parts, and they were planning to make all of them into movies.

Posted by bbacher on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I'm not spending a fucking red cent on this film. I'll wait until I can download the whole thing from the internet so I can smoke my pot and drink my beer and not have to listen to people coughing and their wining kinds. The movie might get better and worth watching!

Gay people are cool. I wish Star Wars and more gay romances, like Frodo & Sam in LOTR. Power to the pink people.

Posted by Ron Mexico on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I for one, am looking forward to it. Saved the best for last, me thinks? Thanks Matt!

BTW> how can so many people who have not seen the movie already have such heated opinions on it? Can't you edit the small minds off the comments section, Matt?

Posted by Coburn69 on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

YOU ARE ALL GAY STAR WARS NERDS. GET A LIFE, THROUGH AWAY YOUR BLOWUP DOLLS, AND STOP TAKING IT UP THE ASS. BTW, I DO NOT MEAN TO TROLL LOSERS

Posted by bill on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I feel sorry for anyone who thinks 1 and 2 were any good. They certainly were NOT on par with 4, 5, and 6. Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Hot-As-Fuck Portman: all did great jobs, considering the lame dialog they had to work with. But the kid in 1 and Hayden Cocksmoker in 2 both sucked ass. Neither of them could act worth a shit, and as someone pointed out earlier, all signs suggest that Hayden dude still sucks. Wich is a shame. Crappy writing and shitty acting can't be saved by any amount of CGI.

Posted by skidoo on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I was also invited to the sneak preview and have seen this. The first star wars movie I've seen since the original and boy this was not worth paying a theatre admission for. And I honestly would not say that star wars is the best movie franchise ever, that's ludachrist. Anyways, if you want good advice, wait until it's in the video store at the "weekly" rental rate, even paying the "new release" rate is a rip-off.

Posted by Not A Fanboy on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Is Natalie Portman in a metal bikini at any point? Because if not I'm not interested.

ep. 1 was cool for many reason, kinda gay for others. ep. 2 was gay for so many reasons, and not really cool at all. I will give ep. 3 a chance, but I'm not expecting too much out of it.
The problem with ep. 3 is that it bridges the gap between the wonderful originals, and the half-ass new movies. I'm worried that elements of Lucas' modern blunders might taint my love of the originals.

Posted by John Smith 1882 on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

After reading a long review on the movie yesterday in Premiere, I see all 6 movies in a new light. It doesn't mean I'm going to like 1 and 2 anymore than I do now, which isin't much at all, but when this was written, the entire 6 movie series is really about Anakin/Darth. Not Luke, not Leia, not Han but Darth. 1 and 2 make more sense to me now but if he had started with these movies instead of episode 4, this would never have become the franchise it is today.

Posted by Rayn on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

I'll pay to see it, just like the rest of you. But I would pay way more to see all of you retards locked in a large room together. After a few hours you'd all be dead and it would need to be cleaned with a fire hose and a large drain in the floor. Hell yeah I'd pay to see that shit!

I have a theory. Everyone that talks crazy mad smack about the Star Wars flick, must be the same kids that got beaten with the plastic light sabers by all the other kids when they were younger. Thus, the hate towards Lucas and his Star Wars Flicks.

Hmm.. probably do not have to many friends either. I almost feel sorry for them.... ehhhhhh.. but i just dont.

I saw SWIII the other night and I thought it pretty ridiculous. Corny, badly acted, lame motivations and just no good. Most of the crowd laughed at the 'serious' scenes. [I actually liked the second one a bit better].

ok there's a lot of crap written here. but without a shadow of a doubt the biggest travesty is tk saying that spielberg is the only director that can combine action and drama. nothing against spielberg but he learnt from guys like kubrick - remember paths of glory?. its like saying andrew lloyd webber is the only composer who can combine emotive composition with classical technique. you're kidding yourselves there isn't an original idea amongst any of this.

Posted by clinkydrinky on May 5, 2005 at 04:50PM

Hey all you whiners, why don't you write, produce, direct, and create new special effects for your movie. This is entertainment! Like it, leave it or create your own.

To comment to bbacher, I don't think this will be the last movie. I think Lucas will wait a few years and make the world believe it's over then shock us all and start filming Episodes VI, VIII, IX. Let's face it, it's a great story. I don't think he'd want to disappoint his "true fans".
