What happened? Live 8 has begun, with the first show, taking place in Japan. Performers included Bjork, Good Charlotte, and many popular acts from overseas. But attendance was a "disappointing" 10,000 people. The rest of the Live 8 concerts will be underway soon, with shows in Philadelphia, London, Rome, and more.
Plus, there will be street demonstrations called "The Long Walk to Justice" in Washington, Berlin, Paris, Rome, London, and Edinburgh.
For more information on the concerts, or how to get involved, check out the Live 8 Web site here.
MTV/VH-1's coverage of this even has been abominable.
Not only that, when MTV was trying to explain the significance of poverty in Africa and what Live 8 seeks to accomplish, they got the definition of fair trade all wrong. They called fair trade trade without having to pay tariffs. That's an element of free trade as much as it is fair trade. Fair trade involves establishing standards and paying a "fair" value for products. Oh well.
