'Air Guitar' Sensation

On Monday - just as we were announcing the features lineup - the trades announced that DreamWorks has greenlit a screenplay dubbed, "Untitled Air Guitar Project." It's based on, among other sources, the documentary Air Guitar Nation, which will have its world premiere in the "24 Beats Per Second" sidebar at SXSW 2006. Here's an excerpt from the Variety story:

DreamWorks is jamming with a comedy pic about the competitive world of air guitar. The studio has snapped up the Untitled Air Guitar project from writing team Ian Roberts and Jay Martel, with Steve Brill aboard to direct. Barry Josephson and his Josephson Entertainment are producing.

Broad comedy is expected to be a mix of several air guitar-themed works, including a docu about the cult-like world of air guitar competitions and an upcoming memoir by Dan Crane about his time onstage as a fictitious air guitar rocker. That book is due this year from Riverhead Press, while the docu is scheduled to unspool at the upcoming South by Southwest Festival.
