AusChron: 'Darkly' Frankly

There's a lot of advance publicity surrounding A Scanner Darkly this weekend as it opens in select cities. But, by far some of the best coverage I've read, is the new Austin Chronicle cover story by various writers. Director Richard Linklater chats about his new film's place in the realm of "drug movies," what Philip K. Dick story he wanted to adapt first, and some tension behind the scenes. Plus, he speaks about the risk of making the film animated:

"I had it in mind as animated from the get-go. But I still had to kind of fight the fight, which is probably one of the reasons the film didn't happen for two years after I wrote it. The word came down from above that adults don't really go to animated movies. And this is obviously not a kids' film. So it kind of lingered in the background for a while. It wasn't until the actors came aboard and we kept our budget low that it began to happen. I don't think it would have benefitted from being a $25 million, live-action studio production. I think that's where the adaptation would lose itself."

In addition, there is an interview with producer Tommy Pallotta and animators Jason Archer and Paul Beck. And, an insightful discussion with the film's composer, Austin musician Graham Reynolds.
