CNN Money has posted an article analyzing the possible aftershock of the recent YouTube acquisition by Google. The (wildly optimistic) question on the mind of everyone (who was interviewed for this article) is, "What will be the next major online-video purchase?" And, for indie film audiences and filmmakers, will this mean an opportunity to get content in front of eyes that would otherwise miss it? It's hard to say, and even harder to tell if any more outlets will get a major purchase.

MySpace has its video component (and they will soon open a download store, which could net proceeds for artists), Microsoft is developing its own video service, and AtomFilms and iFilm were already purchased. Does iKlipz have a shot? What about (the somewhat different) mobile video site, iThentic? What about the video/filmmakers? From the CNN Money article:

"You do need to react to this deal if you are a competitor but it's just a matter of how. Google is inflating the value of the market overall because they can afford to do so," said Bill Wise, chief executive officer of Did-it Search Marketing, a paid search advertising firm based in New York.

The $1.65 billion price tag for YouTube may in fact mark the beginning of the end for this latest dot-com craze. Instead of forcing other media firms to make acquisitions, it could scare them off.
