The long, illustrious history of the SXSW Film Festival trailers constantly gives us a challenge on how to top ourselves each and every year. It all began in 2000, when our trailers were made by local DP and AFS co-founder, Lee Daniel. The next year, Canadian documentary legend Ron Mann turned it up a notch with these awesome shorts. The year after that, the SXSW Film trailers became famous (and award-winning), when Dan Brown, Kent Osbourne, and Mike Mitchell collaborated for the "Burger Hut" series. Since then, there have been a bevy of wonderful trailers, including the work of Bob Odenkirk, who enlisted actor pals Jeff Goldblum and Ron Livingston for some memorable moments onscreen. Last year, IFC produced our "policy trailers," and may do it again. Though, in addition, we've enlisted a new team of filmmaking talent to lend a hand and make some new live-action ones to be thrown in the mix. For 2007, the SXSW Film Festival trailers will be directed by... wait for it... Joe Swanberg!

Joe is the acclaimed and award-winning Chicago director of the fest-circuit favorites Kissing on the Mouth and LOL. Plus, he recently debuted his new online soap opera, Young American Bodies, via Nerve.com. Joe has just wrapped production on his third feature, Hannah Takes the Stairs. While on the set, he and the cast made a handful of hilarious SXSW trailers that embody the crazy spirit of making a low-budget film. The cast of the trailers will mirror the cast of the film, a dream team of indie-film talent, including: Andrew Bujalski, Mark Duplass, Kent Osbourne, Ry Russo-Young, and Todd Rohal. One of the biggest challenges over the next few months will be containing our excitement for the rest of the world to see what they've put together, when they debut at SXSW 2007. Stay tuned.
