On Saturday night, I did my duty as an American citizen, and saw Spider-Man 3. Jarren and I attended with SXSWer Justin Bankston and his wife, Emily. We weren't alone: the movie is projected to make about $150 million this weekend, the biggest three-day opening ever. As much as I enjoyed the first two films, I went in with mild expectations, and found myself more or less surprised. While it has its flaws and its hangups, I was entertained the whole time. The special effects were top-notch, the action sequences were thorough, and these more than made up for any hackneyed storylines or stale character developments. Of course, we also saw the film in one of the best environments possible: the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. The best theater in America created a fun movie-going experience, which included the typical pre-show entertainment (vintage Spider-Man cartoons, behind-the-scenes documentaries, etc.).
