'Knocked' Up on Monday

Sleeper comedy hit, Knocked Up, finished second behind Pirates this past weekend for its debut (at approx. $30 million). This is great news for fans of original, non-sequel comedies starring relative unknowns. But interesting news came Tuesday, when the numbers for Monday were revealed. It appears here, that Knocked Up actually beat Pirates on Monday (with $4.4 mil vs. $4.1 mil), becoming the number one film at the box office for that day. Especially interesting when you consider that it was a workday, school is out, and Knocked Up is rated "R." Looks like the word-of-mouth on this one is gonna help, and with any luck, it may have the kind of legs Joe Leydon predicted in his Variety review during SXSW when the film screened.

Now, of course, Knocked Up will be lucky to finish in the Top 5 this upcoming weekend. That's when it will do battle with not only Pirates and Shrek, but also newcomers like Ocean's Thirteen, Hostel Part II, and Surf's Up. Stranger things have happened... I'll update this post with news as it comes up.
