Rohal's Favorites: 'Hannah' Takes the Summer

There's something kinda cool and crazy about the fact that Joe Swanberg's Hannah Takes the Stairs is a summer movie, technically. While it opens at the end of this summer (August 22 in New York) and certainly is far far far from what one would call a conventional "blockbuster," it sort of is a blockbuster in a weird, American indie kinda way. So, I wanted to poll some of the cast/crew about their favorite films and music during the Summer of 2007. Unofficially asking what other summer entertainment can you recommend to audiences. First up, is Hannah scene-stealer and Guatemalan Handshake director Todd Rohal:

Me: What is your favorite movie of Summer 2007 and why?

Todd Rohal: I just got a bootleg copy of the Andrew Bujalski sex tape...I'd been hearing about it on the Mumblecore chat sites...especially the ones in Africa...and could not wait to get my hands on it. I was expecting something to top the Sizemore tape, but this one is...well...confounding.

Basically, it's not like any other sex tape I've ever seen (I collect them). It's shot in 16mm B&W and it's mostly just Andrew on a couch with a girl talking to him nonstop...for an entire 400ft load of film...He's kind of slouching on the couch against a white wall and just going on and on in this neurotic way...and just when things start to get going...it ends. I don't get it.

I showed it to some of my friends and THEY LOVED IT...but basically I just don't understand what the big deal is. Anyhow, I'm looking forward to the Apichatpong Weerasethakul sex tape, which I just bought off a guy in the 2 train. I guess that it's 4 hours long (2 discs!) and the bloggers from Reverse Shot are in it and they're all over him. The guy who sold it to me called it "disgusting"...I can't wait!

See more of Todd, in 'Hannah Takes the Stairs' on August 22.

Is it time to launch a gossip column to cover the squabbles and scandals of the film blogosphere? There’s not much drama here on the East Coast...
