'Run Granny Run' Acquired by HBO and Arts Alliance America

It's already become a busy month of distribution news for SXSW 2007 alumni. The latest announcement comes for Marlo Poras' audience-award winning SXSW 2007 world premiere, Run Granny Run, which has been acquired by HBO. A defiantly charming and gripping documentary, Poras' film follows the electoral campaign of Doris "Granny D" Haddock, who ran for a New Hampshire Senate seat, at the age of 94. The documentary was a big hit with SXSW audiences, no doubt heightened by the fact that the charismatic Granny D was a staple at festival screenings and parties (her favorite film at the festival: Lucy Walker's Blindsight). Poras' skill as a documentary filmmaker (she previously made the SXSW 2002 selection, Mai's America) makes this more than just your average "election doc." It's terrific journalism.

According to Variety, HBO has plans to premiere the documentary on October 18, followed by high-profile encores on election day, November 6. In addition, home video rights for Run Granny Run were bought by Arts Alliance America which has its sights on releasing the doc under their "Morgan Spurlock Presents" label.
