Gaze at Your Shoes: MBV Reunion

I'm totally mixed on how I feel about this news. Apparently influential shoegazer/noise-rock band, My Bloody Valentine, is plotting a reunion which will include a new studio album. The almost mythical band's history is riddled with unexpected exits and a lack of product. In a way, this is akin to The Pixies reunion of two years ago, in that a mega-acclaimed early 1990s college rock act decides to reunite following years of new fans coming to the party. While, The Pixies have wisely avoided recording a new studio album, MBV is forging ahead to create some new material.

That, on the other hand, may be the misstep. Reunited bands don't have to record new albums. It often results in lackluster music (see Jane's Addiction, New Order). Just tour and tour and tour. That's what fans of My Bloody Valentine (of which I am one) have been missing over the years. They're never gonna match the awe-inspiring beauty of 1991's Loveless, unless bandleader Kevin Shields has something truly unique up his sleeze.
