When I saw the winners of the annual National Society of Film Critics awards, I found much of the same: There Will Be Blood for Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor, No End In Sight for Best Documentary, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days for Best Foreign Film, etc. But things get very unique with the Best Supporting Actor and Actress prizes. Casey Affleck won Supporting Actor (for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), beating usual favorite Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men). And, Cate Blanchett won Supporting Actress (for I'm Not There), beating usual favorite Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone). It's an interesting turn of events, and will be worth watching to see if it turns the tides at all. Meanwhile, another surprise win for the NSFC, was Tamara Jenkins' Best Screenplay for The Savages.
