On Sunday afternoon, my mom (who came to town for a short visit) and I caught a matinee performance of the hit Broadway revival play, Boeing Boeing. I don't normally blog about theater events in New York, and I don't think that will necessarily change anytime soon, but I did wanna say this is a show worth catching. Unusually brisk and fully amusing, the show is an adaptation of a British farce about an expat living in 1960s Paris (Bradley Whitford) who must juggle three different girlfriends (Gina Gershon, Mary McCormack, Kathryn Hahn) who are each flight attendants from three different countries. He has the perfect set-up: as one ships off, the next arrives with no idea. The only people who know the secret, are his French maid (Christine Baranski) and an old college pal (Mark Rylance).

Matters become complicated with the introduction of the new Boeing jet plane, which means all of the girlfriends can now visit their man in half the time, making his juggling act a bigger challenge. The play is full of machine-gun dialogue, non-stop entrances/exits, and lots of shouting. All of which can sometimes mean disaster, but it's also very funny, and Mark Rylance is especially fantastic in his Tony-winning performance. And, of course Baranski is great as usual. Surprisingly strong, however, is McCormack who portrays a German stewardess with amazing gusto. I'd say catch Boeing Boeing before this original cast flies away.
