Could 'Watchmen' In Fact... Suck?

Easily the most anticipated studio film of the season is Watchmen, Zack Snyder's adaptation of the incredibly beloved graphic novel. I'm personally stoked to see the film, especially having just finished the book, which I rather enjoyed. But, hit the brakes. Early word is not kind. Could this film, which so many geeks are awaiting, in fact suck? If that's the case, and you also have the Oscar snubs for The Dark Knight, the superhero-cinema haters are gonna have a field day. Jeffrey Wells shares a recent report that includes, "Watchmen basically alternates between campy silliness and 2nd-rate comic book melodrama. At some points on the level of live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." I'm gonna make up my own mind, but this is not the first negative word coming out of early screenings.

I'm not optimistic about it and I liked the comic. Just because Snyder slavishly replicates scenes and dialogue doesn't make up for the fact that he does it in the cheesiest, matrix-y variable speed car-commercial style possible, or crams it full of terrible incidental music. I saw 300 at the end of Butt-Numb-a-Thon, and while the nerds ate it up, I thought it was a lot like being forced to watch a kid play through a fascist, homoerotic videogame without being able to pick up the controller to play along. On the other hand, I know that Rodney from Twitch has been very positive about the footage he has seen, and I think he generally has excellent taste.
