In a town like Austin, festivals have to be careful not to step on each other's dates. That's not the case in the New York area, especially over the next three weeks. I already blogged about the first annual BAMcinemaFest, but there are three more fests in the mix this June. Here they are:
Essentially the New York Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, NewFest runs June 4-11, at the newly-outfitted SVA Theater in Chelsea. The lineup includes some of the last year's big highlights in queer cinema, including the documentaries Prodigal Sons, Off and Running, and (plug alert) our own Trinidad.
BROOKLYN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
The other Brooklyn festival this month is the grandaddy, at 12 years old. BIFF opens June 5 with the New York premiere of Daryl Wein's relationship comedy Breaking Upwards. This year's fest runs till June 14 at the Brooklyn Heights Cinema.
NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL
June 19 to July 5 will be the 8th annual New York Asian Film Festival, the city's ultimate celebration of contemporary Asian cinema. The festival just announced three big world premieres, including Vampire Girl Versus Frankenstein Girl. Of course, many of the selections are on the more serious side, but I just love that title.
