NIN Helps Prove that "Free" Doesn't Kill

We have ongoing discussions about free content versus paid content, especially when it pertains to launching a film on an ad-supported streaming site like Joost or Hulu or SnagFilms vs. only offering it on iTunes or Amazon VOD, etc. We always see encouraging data displaying that free availability does not typically hurt sales. If anything, you see the free availability boost more traditional transactions. This week, as Amazon MP3 announced its top-selling albums of 2008, the world learned something very interesting: the Nine Inch Nails album, Ghosts I-IV, was the biggest earner on the site. It beat the new Coldplay record, among others. What's more, the NIN album was simulatneously available for free. So, despite consumers having a choice between free and paid, the album still sold more copies than any other on Amazon MP3. See what I mean?
