I was relenting support for Mickey Rourke at this year's Oscars, not because I don't think his performance in The Wrestler is amazing (it is), but because of his hateful comments over the last few months. However, if there was one feeling he provoked during Sunday night's acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, it was sympathy and sincerity. The guy knows his life has become a wreck, but he still turned in a top-notch performance. He thanked his dogs during the Globes speech, for Christ's sake, because they were always there for him when he was on his own. By not giving him support, I'm the one lacking compassion or understanding. I'm just another doubter in a sea of Rourke doubters. The guy is a walking, talking Bruce Springsteen song. All the more appropriate, since The Boss won a Globe as well for his Wrestler title track. So, yes, I've come around. I hope Mickey Rourke wins an Oscar next month. He's the best candidate, but also the best comeback.
