So, Fox News film writer Roger Friedman has been fired over his online review of a pirated copy of Fox's upcoming blockbuster, Wolverine. Friedman's track record aside, I can't suggest this was a bad decision on the part of parent company News Corp. And I'm sure for a long time, bloggers will refer to impulsive acts of questionable posting as "pulling a Roger Friedman." The fact of the matter is, just because something seems like a good blogging opportunity doesn't always make it so in hindsight. I'm sure Friedman thought, "The pirated Wolverine is news! If I review it, I'll have a big scoop!" Maybe that was married with thoughts of pleasing his employer, by giving their PR disaster a good spin, and a positive review. Whatever the motivation, Friedman probably forgot to recognize that he would be not only admitting to a crime but also admitting to a crime committed against his employer. Sometimes bloggers, myself included, need to take a moment before rushing to post a piece that is potentially damaging. Of course, most bloggers don't get a paycheck from a multinational media corporation. It's hard to be a rouge blogger and a company man at the same time.
