VIDEO: Sight & Sound Film Poll: Ekkehard Knörer and Michael Baute on UNDER THE BRIDGES

The fifth video in our ongoing series is the first to involve a film on my own top ten list for the Sight & Sound Film Poll. But I'm not one of the commentators on the video. Nor is film on the top ten list of either of the commentators. But somehow the three of us form "an inclusive whole" (to use a phrase in the video) to make the case for why Under the Bridges is one of the greatest films ever made.

CRUEL SUMMER: WARGAMES (1983)

The fantastic opening sequence of "WarGames" uses one of the most basic constructs of video games: just when you think you’ve figured out a level, it turns out to be part of a bigger scenario.

VIDEO ESSAY: THREE REASONS: Kaneto Shindô's HUMAN

In the early morning of May 29th, Japan lost its oldest living director, and in my opinion one of the best.

GIRLS RECAP 8: WEIRDOS NEED GIRLFRIENDS TOO

"Weirdos Need Girlfriends Too" is another "Girls" episode title that contains multitudes. Or at least Marnies, since the title doesn't just mean romantic girlfriends, but platonic friends too.

GAME OF THRONES RECAP 10: VALAR MORGHULIS

One of the key questions facing "Game Of Thrones" the series, as well as its source material, is: “What’s this about?” And by this I mean: “What is this story? How is it being told? Where is this leading?” Certainly there’s drama, and characters change, grow, collapse, or die, but it’s difficult to see a clear structure at times.

VIDEO ESSAY: Sight & Sound Film Poll - Vadim Rizov on Apichatpong Weerasethakul's THE ANTHEM

This nominated title for the Sight & Sound Poll of the greatest films of all time embodies two underrepresented categories: a short film, made after the year 2000.

SIMON SAYS: White Men Can't Ninja

In 1981, producer-cum-director Menahem Golan was supposed to direct Charles Bronson in "Death Wish 2." But, as the apocryphal story goes, Bronson didn't want Golan at the helm. So Golan directed "Enter the Ninja"—a movie which, oddly enough, has remote ties to the spaghetti western genre.

GREY MATTERS: What Is Sherlock Holmes Afraid Of?

"Sherlock," Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’s present-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s century-old sleuthing stories, gives us two heroic figures struggling with, well, not much. But you wouldn’t know it to watch them, as the creators of the most recent version of "Doctor Who" conjure up one of this year’s best rides.
