I have memories of Brick Lane from a year studying in London. We would ride the tube to the South Asian street to taste pungent curries, like edible fireworks. The incendiary tale here is the journey of a Bangladeshi girl, Nazneen, who enters an arranged marriage and moves to England where she has a passionate affair. The visually sumptuous film redeems its predictable beginning with an interesting end. Surprisingly, the most intriguing character in this woman's story by a woman director (Sarah Gavron) is the overbearing cuckholded husband.
