The two-screen Beekman Theatre just reopened in its new location

A new theater opened today on Manhattan’s Upper East Side!  And—be still my heart—foreign language pictures will be among those shown!!!  “Tell No One” is currently playing and next month, Desplechin’s “A Christmas Tale,” along with Amerindies.

The new Beekman, at 1271 Second Ave., between E. 66th and 67th, is in the vicinity of the the former theater of the same name.  It feels new and spacious, with about 435 seats in each room.  This afternoon manager/programmer Jeffrey Jacobs was taking care of the final details (like getting salt shakers for popcorn) after a two-month scramble to get the movie house up and running.  Last month his other Manhattan theater, The Paris, celebrated its 60th anniversary.  Jacobs told me that running both will give him flexibility in programming.

“Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” not the best fit for the fur coat crowd of The Paris,  could do well at the Beekman, for example.
