Activism Alert:  I’m seeking FOOD themed documentaries

In a previous post, I mentioned that I’m creating some posts on my “Week of Wonders” blog for issue-oriented documentaries.  The first topic is something we can all relate to: safe and healthy FOOD.  If you are a filmmaker with a film on this topic, please write to me so that I can include it.  Distributors and exhibitors are also welcome to write me.  I already have a few really great docs to recommend, and some links to guide us on how to get involved.  (This is going to be a journey into my own activism, too!)

CALL OUT TO FILMMAKERS: Please write me at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) if you’re working on a film or have one finished on the topic of FOOD, so I can include it in the next column.

Activism Alert: Be the Change (or how Obama’s call to service relates to independent film)

The motto “Be the Change,” associated with Barack Obama’s call to service, is inspired by Gandhi’s advice, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Lots of folks in the independent film world already live by this creed—screenwriters who choose to examine humanity rather than rely on formulaic stories, communities of filmmakers who hold artistic quality above greed, journalists who make documentaries to advocate for social change, theater programmers who exhibit films emphasizing a plurality of voices, distributors who mount grassroots marketing campaigns for issue-oriented films, and of course audiences who are receptive to independent visions and are open to being informed and engaged.

In the spirit of the day, I’d like to do my part to support the film community in working towards a better world.

To this end, I will create some posts that will each highlight one issue and the documentaries (old and new) that explore it, as well as activism to take around the subject.  How to begin?  I thought I would start with the basics and take on the subject of safe and healthy FOOD to kick-off the run.  (Future topics may revolve around human rights, pollution, censorship, etc.)  I hope this can become an interactive series, where readers add their two cents and filmmakers, distributors, and exhibitors write in to me to promote their pertinent work.
