Thessaloniki Recap- Kitano’s rabid fans

IMG_0883.jpg

Takeshi Kitano at a reception in his honor

At a ceremony for Takeshi Kitano, someone in the screaming crowd shouted, “Run for president!”  Several cried out in Japanese, “Arigato!”  At a reception the next day, a woman held her baby close to him for a lucky photograph.

His film “Achilles and the Tortoise” was selected as a favorite by many I spoke with at the festival.  The metaphorically autobiographical black comedy takes the myth of the suffering artist to disturbing extremes.  It starts off slowly, but then moves into wildly sick humor.  I’m not sure if it has a US distribution deal.  It feels like a Magnolia/ Magnet style film to me.
