In the first half of the year, I saw more great films than I could fit on a Top Ten, but for the sake of discipline, here's my list, culled from New York theatrical releases from January thru June:
Cherry Blossoms by Doris Dörrie
24 City by Zhang Ke Jia
Adoration by Atom Egoyan
Coraline by Henry Selick
Sleep Dealer by Alex Rivera
12 by Nikita Mikhalkov
Donkey Punch by Oliver Blackburn
Goodbye Solo by Ramin Bahrani
Lemon Tree by Eran Riklis
Hunger by Steve McQueen
The tendency is to forget the first half of the year when we're making our Top Tens in December!!!
What do you think is the best film so far this year?

I always like your movie recommendations. We seem to share the same taste. When I haven't already seen the films you recommend, I seek them out on NetFlix. Your list of the Best of 2009 (so far) has many obscure films, or ones that had short runs (in NYC). Your readers might want to know which movies are now available on DVD and if NetFlix has them. I saw Sleep Dealer in a theater. As for the others, the following are currently available through NetFlix: Cherry Blossoms by Doris Dörrie Coraline by Henry Selick Donkey Punch by Oliver Blackburn 12 by Nikita Mikhalkov The following are slated to come out on DVD and will subsequently be available on NetFlix: Adoration by Atom Egoyan Goodbye Solo by Ramin Bahrani Hunger by Steve McQueen Lemon Tree by Eran Riklis 24 City by Zhang Ke Jia
