Apart from a second viewing of 2046, which is undoubtedly an event, I had two delightful experiences at Walter Reade Theater: John Huston's gorgeous and melancholy 1952 Moulin Rouge, for the first time, and Singin' in the Rain, for, oh, the 127th time. Both were presented as part of the (woefully short) Technicolor series at Lincoln Center. Even if the Moulin Rouge print was dulled, it was wonderful to see Huston's unsurprisingly gritty take on Toulouse-Lautrec, embodied nobly and sadly by Jose Ferrer, Most impressive is Huston's devotion to recreating Toulouse-Lautrec's etchings themselves, both with his wonderfully mobile camera as well as with some lovely montage sequences that animate his paintings through succinct cuts. Nice to catch it on the big screen.
