Director Victor Dashuk
Anyone interested in East European politics and/or history and/or great movies should check out the pair of docs at the Pioneer this week Long Knives Night and Reporting from a Rabbit Hutch, running today through Wednesday, June 7th. The director, Victor Dashuk, wanted to expose the realities of life in Belarus—a landlocked republic between Russia and Poland—under President Aleksandr G. Lukashenko. The quality isn't great (they were filmed on celluloid but had to be smuggled out of the country on tape) but they're quite powerful if highly subjective. A few scenes are tough to watch, and Dashuk's hatred for Lukashenko goes a bit overboard (he compares the guy to Satan). But lives were risked to make these films, and maybe the least we can do is head to East 3rd Street to see them.
