Apparently, kids who saw this during prime-time in 1978 got the shit scared out of them so badly they still have this nattering ventriloquist's voice stuck in their head to this day. The entire film, incidentally, directed by Richard Attenborough, haunted a few of my dreams upon renting it some years later, in the Eighties. Added fun: a deranged Anthony Hopkins years before Hannibal the Cannibal supposedly supplying the whiny, American-accented voice of the murderous dummy "Fats," whose W.C. Fields-meets-Chamberlain-the-Skeksis intonations are so far from Hopkins' Welsh propriety that its strangeness does in fact create an uncannily frightening dissonance.

    IS TRUE!
This movie scared the crap out of me as a kid. To this day, "Magic is fun/ we're dead" is a line that scares me! I have not trusted a ventriloquist since.
