Q&A WITH DIRECTORS LUCIEN CASTAING-TAYLOR AND ILISA BARBASH
Online film journal Reverse Shot and food magazine Edible Manhattan close their monthly summer screening series Eat This Film! September 15 with Sweetgrass, a highlight of the 2009 New York Film Festival and one of the best nonfiction films in years. Featuring gorgeous cinematography and immersive storytelling, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Ilisa Barbash’s anthropological documentary follows a flock of sheep on a their last trek through Montana’s Beartooth Mountains as they search for grazing grass—capturing with both tenderness and un-sentimentality a vanishing way of life.
Immediately following the film, Barbash and Castaing-Taylor will join Greenmarket sheep farmer Eugene Wyatt from Catskill Merino Sheep Farm to discuss Sweetgrass and shed light on raising (and filming) sheep.
Prior to the feature, Reverse Shot will screen a trio of four-minute shorts they’ve produced with Eat This Film!’s previous notable guest speakers, including Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater (Before Sunset, School of Rock), best-selling author Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation, Reefer Madness), James Beard Award essayist and author Betty Fussell (Masters of American Cookery, Raising Steaks), and celebrated chef Marco Canora (Hearth, Terroir).
