David Thomson has been invoked over the past few years in the film community as a source of derision as much as a grizzled old cinephile standby, his ridiculous, opaque grandstanding claims as equal to his moments of stunning lucidity.
But honestly, David....what the fuck is this supposed to be? Maybe it's time to hang up your hat, cowpoke?

that was just plain crazy nonsense. really, quite frankly, dumb. wanna give a queer reading to westerns? while it's probably been done already, that's fine, go ahead. lame jokes and a running commentary about the administration and nothing much else? what a waste of time. lame.

This is the best thing I've ever read. It's like he's channeling a lobotomized Armond. My favorite part:
"Don't you remember in Giant, where the James Dean character invites Elizabeth Taylor into his shack for some "tea"? Just about the most haunting confession of the gay life in all those endless miles of drab territory in the 1950s."
10.0 - I always thought tea=fag.
Now that David's managed to successfully "out" the Western, maybe he should focus his piercing gaydar on an even more difficult project: Harvey Fierstein.

Well, maybe... but he's definitly right about "The Left-Handed Gun", at least... Come on: Paul Newman becomes a crazed killer because the bad guys shot Hurd Hatfield just when the two of them were starting to get close.
Anyway, I though the Preminger article he wrote for Sight and Sound this spring claiming that Anatomy of a Murder was anything other than a terrible movie was a lot crazier. On account of, you know, Anatomy of a Murder being a really, really terrible movie.
