    Life Of Pi

A book that many people considered unfilmable has inspired one of the year’s most riveting and rewarding movies. I don’t like using hype words, but I found 'Life of Pi' truly magical. I’m even enthusiastic about its use of 3-D, which seems organic and genuinely enhances the film.

    Rise of the Guardians

Too many films aimed at children lack a sense of wonder, which is one reason I like 'Rise of the Guardians.' Drawing on the mythology devised by author William Joyce in his series of books 'The Guardians of Childhood,' the movie introduces us to the figures that figure so importantly in almost every...

Review: 'Life Of Pi' Is An Inspiring & Visually Stunning Tale Of Faith, Hope & Self-Discovery

Taiwanese-born American film director Ang Lee’s career is difficult to pin down. He’s constructed nuanced and well-crafted dramas of various milieus and textures (from “The Ice Storm,” and “Sense and Sensibility” to the more erotic “Lust/Caution” and “Brokeback Mountain”) and orchestrated films of m...

Review: Blood & Water Flow Freely In Jacques Audiard's Beautiful & Moving 'Rust & Bone'

What is it we do to survive? Who is it we love? Who is it we fight? What are the forces seen and unseen that push our lives in directions we could have never expected? These are the questions that Jacques Audiard tackles in his latest, "Rust And Bone," a beautiful, moving story of two fractured live...

Is Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi' More Than An Adventure Movie?

Life of Pi is not entirely about a boy and his tiger; but there is a lot about a boy and a tiger, and if you don’t like adventure tales, this is not the film for you.

Review Roundup: 'Inventing David Geffen' Takes a Long, Respectful Look at a Hollywood Mega-Mogul

Susan Lacy's documentary "Inventing David Geffen," which premieres November 20 on PBS as part of the "American Masters" series, is generally sitting well with the critics. The portrait of the intimidating "agent-manager-record-mogul-movie-mogul" is a comprehensive look at Geffen's many achievements,...

    Emotional Creature Celebrates Girls Lives

There have been so few shows and events that truly reveal what it is like to be a girl that when you see truth - the good and the bad - you immediately know that you are seeing something special. For me, the TV show that epitomized girlhood will always be My So Called Life, the Winnie Holzman creat...

Review: 'Red Dawn' Intermingles Inept Jingoism With Casual, Wrongheaded Racism

Why is it that films that spend the longest time on the shelves feel so unfinished? Reportedly filmed three years ago, Dan Bradley’s strikingly incompetent “Red Dawn” is now being dumped in theaters, stitched together with scotch tape and falling apart at the seams, letting casual racism and misanth...

ADIFF 2012 Review: 'La Pirogue' And The African Struggle

A vast expanse of ocean. A small boat, bobbing with uncertainty amongst looming waves. It’s an image that’s been created many times in many iterations across the cinema landscape - in Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat, in The Perfect Storm, more recently in Ang Lee’s opus Life...
