Dwayne Johnson Teases Potential DC Comics Superhero Movie...

Fanboys are all worked up in a frenzy over the above tweet from Dwayne Johnson yesterday evening.

The short story goes... as you can see, a fan suggested that Dwayne would be a good fit for either of the 2 DC Comics characters the fan mentions: Gravedigger or John Stewart (aka the black Green Lantern).

And of course, Dwayne Johnson responded to the fans tweet with the words... "Funny U say that.." as if implying that a movie based on a DC Comics character with him starring in it, might indeed be in the works.

You can imagine all the speculation that followed, and that continues this morning, with the questions being, does this mean Dwayne might be involved in an upcoming DC Comics adaptation? And if so, which character? Gravedigger, John Stewart (Green Lantern), or, as the actor told CBM in a past interview, Black Adam, which he said he's very interested in playing. Or was he just having fun with his followers, teasing them a bit.

Surely he knew that it would create a bit of a frenzy. Dude is a mega star with almost 3 million Twitter followers.

I'll toss this one at all you comic book afficionados out there; especially those familiar with the DC Comics universe of characters.

Your thoughts?

  • Jonathon Ford | January 12, 2013 3:14 AMReply

Dwayne Johnson looks more white than anything!!
    black?? HELL NO!
even his facial features arent black!

  • QBN | March 15, 2013 2:51 AM

He "looks white " to you? LMAO.. time to see the eye doctor homeboy...

  • sneaks | January 15, 2013 1:50 PM

Funny thing is, he isn't white at all. His mother is Samoan and his father is BLACK Nova Scotian (Black).

  • Donella | May 23, 2012 11:25 AMReply

Yeah! More Rock for me! Us. But really me. ;-)

  • Justin D. | May 20, 2012 5:27 PMReply

He was supposed to play DC villain Black Adam in the Captain Marvel movie. I guess that picture fell through.

  • kris | May 19, 2012 6:53 PMReply

Who gives a fk what color he is shut up that's y the world is do messed up

  • AccidentalVisitor | May 19, 2012 4:27 AMReply

Dwayne Johnson has the right to consider himself "black' if he wants. After all his dad was black. Johnson also doesn't shy away from playing black characters. For example his character in GI Joe film was "black" in the comics and the animation. He is also slated to to play black country music legend Charlie Pride in a film that could possibly go into the production stage soon although I'll admit he looks nothing like Pride IMO. But Hollywood gets the casting of black actors wrong almost all the time in terms of "the look" (check out Tyler Perry in the Alex Cross flick) so I won't hold that against Dwayne. Of course Dwayne has the type of appearance that makes him ethnically ambiguous, sorta like Rosario Dawson or Maya Rudolph or Quincy Jones' daughter. They are allowed to slip back and forth between playing characters meant to be seen as black and characters that aren't necessarily identified as black at all. So why can't Dwayne? I'm sure he embraces both sides of his heritage anyway and takes advantage of his racial mix when going after roles on the big screen.

  • Mccormick | January 12, 2013 3:12 AM

are you on crack? dwayne doesnt look black and neither should he say he is,its quite laughable. Megan fox and other caucasian acttresses/actors have native american blood...THEYRE STILL CAUCASIAN!
if you want to bring black in this,,,so what? even caucasians in america have percentages of black blood in them!
anywho, he doesnt look black and he isnt black. Even having a black father or mother doesnt make you black!

  • dean | May 18, 2012 6:00 PMReply

The Black Police, well by that racist "one drop" theory (which I don't subscribe to or abide by because it's racist) he is black. His father was black or part black. He doesn't look black at all. That is, he doesn't look part black. Anyway, that "one drop" theory is racist so please ignore what it "says".

  • lll | March 14, 2013 9:43 PM

DWAYNE LOOKS BLACK and always says hes black

and his daughter is black too

    G.I. JOE

    and more

  • the black police | May 19, 2012 1:29 AM

Pretty much! How idiotic to call someone black who has one black and one white parent! They are as black as they are white. Case closed.

  • The black police | May 18, 2012 2:51 PMReply

Wait, is he considered to be black? (In my view, he is NOT, so why is he being mentioned here?)

  • COMMENT POLICE | March 15, 2013 5:36 AM

  • lll | March 14, 2013 9:44 PM

his mother is samoan -and samoan are brown people

    his dad is black

so nobody from his parents are white

  • Curtis | May 20, 2012 6:33 AM

Oh lawd. I'm continuously puzzled by those who have appointed themselves judges of what blackness is. So by your assessment people like Halle Berry, Nicole Ari Parker, Boris Kodjoe, Jesse Williams, Jurnee Smollett and so many others should not be mentioned on this site? Also folks tend to forget that in case you haven't noticed the description of the site at the top of the page doesn't say "on black American cinema." It says "on cinema of the African diaspora."

  • the black police | May 20, 2012 2:25 AM

Obama is mixed, not black. Im not getting the point of this statement: "although he definitely has more white in him than Dwayne does [his Mom isn't white at all]." Please explain it to me. As for recommendations, I have none, thats what casting directors are for. A black actor who can play the role exists somewhere in this world.

  • JMac | May 19, 2012 1:46 PM

    Meant @ TBP

  • JMac | May 19, 2012 1:41 PM

TBH @ If that's your reasoning then Obama isn't "black" either although he definitely has more white in him than Dwayne does [his Mom isn't white at all]. His Dad looks straight up black to me and would make a great black superhero himself. The Rock looks the same color in that photo as he does in color photos now so still don't know what your problem is. He isn't as dark at the black Green Lantern but he's still black and looks black. If your problem is with skin color, then what buff dark-skinned actor would you recommend for the role who isn't too old?

  • the black police | May 19, 2012 1:27 AM

Well this is a picture alledgedly from his childhood showing him with his parents: I guess his dad looks black or mixed. The Rock looked "blacker" in that picture than he looks now. Now, he just looks Samoan, so I DO NOT think he should be considered for black roles. He does not look black.

  • JMac | May 18, 2012 6:18 PM

You must be thinking of Vin Diesel. Dwayne's dad is black and he's never denied or tried to run away from that.

  • Kid chaos | May 18, 2012 2:18 PMReply

Jug i bet you would like the rock to be in a dress

  • melilah | November 7, 2012 12:19 AM

why would he have a problem being Black, being Black is awesome.

  • Kai | May 18, 2012 12:52 PMReply

I thought John Stewart was black?

  • Tamara | May 18, 2012 11:44 AMReply

I could see him as Green Lantern definitely. But he's got to work on his acting...'coz John Stewart had some deep goings' on before he became Lantern. I'm not as familiar with Gravedigger, so I can't say.

  • CareyCarey | May 20, 2012 10:28 AM

"I mean, these are grown people running around in Spandex ya know LOL AVENGERS...maaan I don't think I can say enough about AVENGERS except for it is worth every penny it has made" . YEP! I caught that *LOL*. That spandex line says it all. First, it was a great line and as I said in the other thread, I thought Avengers was one of the best movies in this genre. But what do I know? Hell, we're talking about guys in spandex -- guys with names like Gravedigger, Green Lantern, GI Joe, Dolomite and Sweet Sweetback*lol*. Oh wait, I am a little confused... those last two dudes are the babies daddies -- aren't they? You know... Rock, Vin Diesel, John Stewart, Rosario Dawson and Maya Rudolph... dey daddies is black -- right? *smirk* Hold it... I better slow down. Now -- Who's The Babies Daddy? Well you know I've never met the guys. So y'll have to tell me their names, and then I'll know who's the babies daddy. But you know it seems to me they give these *hush*blackguys, now-a-days very peculiar names. Strange names, pet Bro and Bo and Vin and Diesel...but I'll try to get through this b/c this is cinema of the African diaspora. So, we gotta know who's black and who's not and who's the babies daddy. Well, let's see, we have Light Skin, Mr. He Don't Look Black,Miss One Drop, Jug, Jodie and Dolamite. WOW! The usual suspects. No wonder black folks are having a hard time coming together -- this mess is a ball of confusion. Damn, tomorrow someone will be ignorant enough to say Kerry Washington ain't black. But I digress. We need to talk about the real thang -- comic book characters, Mr Charlie and who's the real babies daddy. :-)

    @Tamara-LOL "fart-gas"

  • Jug | May 18, 2012 5:32 PM

Oh wait Tamara, you thought I LIKED GL?! Maaaan, that thing was a big steaming pile LOL Two hours I'll never get back. Seriously, I agree with everything you said. I do let Renner off the hook on Bourne only because everyone was paper thin (the "love" between Patton & Josh was straight kleenex). Yeah, GL was a clear case of following TOO closely to source material. Introducing all those Alien characters not only made Hal Jordan "smaller" somehow, but it confused the hell out of people who really weren't sure who to care about LOL It was like a big excuse to spend an fx budget. I think most of DC's characters are hard to make, in this modern age, because there characters are created as "perfect." They're all Gods or God-like, instead of THOR who is technically a "God" but written as a fragile, vulnerable person with all these super powers. Kinda like Hancock in that sense. None of the DC characters were created from that standpoint save Batman & wouldn't you know it, he's human. Plus DC for a long time took themselves waaay too seriously. I mean, these are grown people running around in Spandex ya know LOL AVENGERS...maaan I don't think I can say enough about AVENGERS except for it is worth every penny it has made. If you can, IMAX 3D. Truly believe that is the only way to see a 3D movie now (and I stay away from 3D as much as humanly possible).

  • Tamara | May 18, 2012 5:21 PM

@ SKA, I couldn't get through Southland Tales. LOL. And yeah, I'd rather another selection for Green Lantern, too. @JUG, Renner did NOTHING for me in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL. He was cardboard; and I like dude but the 'new' Ethan Hunt? NO. And I'm hesitant about the BOURNE addition, but we shall see. Both of you posit excellent points in terms of over-saturation. Also @JUG, Green Lantern with Ryan Reynolds was an attempt to be deep? I didn't like that film. I felt they should have focused more on Hal Jordan and less on the league of extra-green night-lights because had I not known ANYTHING about the Justice League and the Lanterns patrolling the galaxy then all of that with the rogue lantern that turned into fart-gas and the other lanterns of all races, nations and creedos in speedos, I would have been lost....and it is in that instance that the writing should have focused more on building UP the character of Jordan's Lantern as opposed to depending on the built-in audience with forehand knowledge of the character/worlds/universe of DC and its brood. That is what I wouldn't mind seeing with 'this' version of Lantern if they pursue it. But also as SKA states, what about Wonder Woman? and the rest of the League? Yeah, I want some pathos; I'd like some CAN be done (DARK KNIGHT)...if that is their choice then Dwayne's gonna have to beef up his 'emotionals' LOL I ramble. I haven't seen Avengers yet so I can't comment on that feature. *gasp* Yeah, I know. I just didn't care to fight the danggone crowds to see it. I'll get to it eventually. Great chatting with you both.

While I do think DJ has the chops - he had the intensity in FASTER, WALKING TALL and SOUTHLAND TALES, (all meh-t0-blah-to-ugh!) - , I'm in the same mindset as Jug. He's already saturated with genre and branded sequels. For DC to be that bold, and reboot GREEN LANTERN - or reimagine a sequel and introduce John Stewart already? - while not even getting JUSTICE LEAGUE or a WONDER WOMAN title up and running...? I dunno; I doubt it. I'd rather see Idris E. or Djimon H. in the role.

  • Jug | May 18, 2012 1:05 PM

I agree Tamara. But here's where I balk, I wonder if he's going to be over-saturated. Maybe audiences don't care, but I think it'll happen. He's attached to a number of different "potential" franchises as well as the face of the latest G.I. JOE. Just like Jeremy Renner, the studios are rushing to throw this dudes face on everything like a milk carton. Renner is the face of a major part of Four franchises, that's a bit much for anybody. Remember that year Jude Law was in 6 movies & Chris Rock made fun of it at the Oscars? The movies either bombed or were lukewarm coming out of the gate & it actually affected his career...well that and he couldnt' keep it in his pants. I love both actors, Renner & The Rock, and I agree about the non-beefy/comedy stuff that Stewart is gonna have to have. But let's be real, Warner B is probably not gonna get smart and go the DARK KNIGHT route with this (they shoulda learned after GREEN LANTERN), so it won't be too super deep. And AVENGERS was just deep enough to give us characters but not pathos-and who cared, it was an awesome movie! As usual tho, I'd love to see someone new or creatively cast to be half the draw for the film...not Tyler Perry/Alex Cross kinda interesting mind you LOL
