Emayatzy Corinealdi & Tequan Richmond Are 2014 Pan African Film Fest 'Rising Stars' Honorees

With the beginning of a brand new year of film festivals - and thus new films - just around the corner, one of the festivals dated for an early 2014 run (as with every other year) is the Pan African Film Festival, which takes place from February 6-17, 2014.

And as you'd expect at this juncture, the festival has begun unveiling its program for next year, starting with the revelation this week, that actors Emayatzy Corinealdi and Tequan Richmond will be feted during the festival's 2014 event, with its annual Rising Stars actor awards, following Omari Hardwick and Nicole Beharie, who were this year's honorees.

Tequan Richmond will receive the festival's annual Canada Lee Award, while Emayatzy Corinealdi will be honored with the Beah Richards Award

Obviously PAFF’s Rising Star awards are named after actors Canada Lee and Oscar-nominee Beah Richards, who pioneered roles for African Americans in cinema, television and stage, and sparked civil rights activism in their work.

Currently, Richmond can be seen giving a quietly intense performance, in Alexandre Moors' critically-acclaimed Beltway sniper drama Blue Caprice, while Corinealdi most recently carried Ava DuVernay’s lauded sophomore fictional drama Middle of Nowhere, for which she won the 22nd annual Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Actor a year ago.

The Pan African Film Festival is gearing up for its 22nd anniversary at the usual Rave Cinemas Baldwin Hills 15, in LA's Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, running from February 6-17, 2014.

PAFF is one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious Black film festivals. Over the years, it has showcased films from all parts of the world, representing the diaspora from just about every continent.

Currently, PAFF is still accepting submissions of independent features, shorts, narratives and documentary films made by or about people of African descent, with the deadline for late submissions just around the corner.

For information about the festival, submission procedures, fees and registration, visit www.paff.org or call 310-337-4737.

The festival will begin making official selection announcements next month, and of course we'll have them for you right here!

Congrats to Tequan and Emayatzy for their 2014 honors.
